I live off the grid in a house and it’s hard enough. It took me years of preparation, conversion to solar, drilling a well learning to raise animals and farm for ourselves. Just lol at thinking you’re going to go from zero to 100% self reliance on the high Rockies with zero experience in less than a few months. Sloots gonna sloot I guess. Feel bad for the kid though.

I don’t think people realize how many skills you have to develop and how much effort you have to put in to surviving to make it work. It is absolutely a full time job just to provide your own food let alone build a cabin.

That is the best way. You have to set up your site and learn skills. At a minimum you need to know how to grow your own food and preserve it, collect, store and purify water, raise animals and butcher and preserve them. You also need to at least have some woodworking skills. The further along you get you need to learn plumbing and electrical. Learning to weld has been one of the most useful things for me. If you live in a cold environment you need to figure how how to start seedlings to transplant - set up cold boxes and a green house. You need a root cellar. You need a wood supply and you need to spend the time to chop it, you also have to let the wood season for at least a year before your can burn it efficiently. Then there’s concrete work when you want to build lasting animals housing or build/expand your house. You need fencing for your animals which can be fooking brutal to build if you live in an area with rock. I could name 100 more things that you need to learn to be entirely self sufficient.

I have a full time job that I do from home but I spend every other waking second working on this stuff.

Like I don’t get how their mind works where it was ok to bring a tent but not seeds to start a garden and tools for building shelter and bridging the gap between what society had provided them and items and systems a family living off grid would already have in place. It’s also not like people would move from more fertile more temperate areas to a mountainous area without bringing some supplies etc..

If you are going to do something life threateningly risky, you need to gradually test your skills, knowledge and assumptions as well as testing a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency plan.
