Ozempic Settles the Obesity Debate: It’s Biology Over Willpower

Ozempic and similar drugs are transforming the world’s understanding of obesity. It isn’t so much about willpower: It’s about biology.

The success of the powerful new class of diabetes and weight-loss drugs shows how important chemistry is to determining a person’s weight. The brain is the body’s chief chemist, regulating appetite and making it difficult for many people to shed pounds and keep them off. The brain determines how much fat it wants people to carry, according to years of research bolstered by the new drugs.

The amount is like a setting on a dial, or what many researchers call a “set point” or “defended fat mass.” The brain maintains the dial setting or set point by regulating how much a person eats. Ozempic, its sister drug Wegovy and another, Mounjaro, lower the dial setting, or set point, in effect by acting on the brain to reduce hunger and make a person feel full sooner, some obesity researchers say.

The new set point lasts as long as a patient is on the drug, they say. Patients who ate a lot before they started taking one of the drugs feel less hungry and fill up more quickly—sometimes after one slice of pizza when they once ate the whole pie.

“This is not about willpower or personal choice,” said Dr. Florencia Halperin, an endocrinologist and chief medical officer of Form, a virtual medical weight-loss clinic. “This is about your brain driving behaviors.”

Do they have studies which show how ghrellin affects how the body wants to process calories and store fat?? Because reading the article it just says the therapies make people feel full and eat less. They could accomplish that with more willpower.

lol bruh, surely you don't think they're the same. The brain automating something where your actions aren't involved is one thing, your brain "driving" you to eat more is another.

No OP, it's literally the opposite. It works because it replaces willpower by making you feel full sooner.

You can not eat a burger if you're hungry.

You can't lower your body 3 degrees because you're hot

yea but it also drives you to take actions like adjusting A/C, shower temp, using blankets, not going outside, etc... you have a choice in those actions but everyone is going to take the choice that the body is suggesting unless you're trying to torture yourself or something.

id, ego, superego. There are some EL fudge cookies in my pantry for a lunch I bought my employees. I love those cookies, but they've been in my pantry for 1 week and I haven't touched them. I wanted a pizza last friday night, but I cooked chicken, peppers, broccoli and cheese instead. My brain drives me to do these things to, but my willpower (superego)keeps me from it. They just lack willpower.

Yeah most people would take the easy way out, unless they had willpower.

Anyway, 50 years ago there wasn't an obesity epidemic. Are you telling me people's endocrine system magically evolved in 50 years to eat more food?

It’s possible to be hungry and not eat. People tell their brain to fukk off all the time. If people constantly gave in to every urge or desire we’d be ruined pretty quickly. So yes, it is about willpower and being able to resist temptation. Unless, as I asked about earlier, they have found a relationship between ghrellin levels and how your body processes calories and stores fat that they can successfully attribute the differences to.

"Biology" isnt artificially restricting ones stomach capacity (by making you feel full).

You'll be thin until you get thyroid cancer. Then you'll be really thin.

Bull****. Obesity is about sugar and process foods.

Take them out of your diet and you will instantly start losing weight.

If it actually works safely and people need less willpower to be fit, it doesn't bother me that much. So what if they have to put in less effort for decent results? That said, I doubt that there aren't some serious long term drawbacks to this. And yeah, I hope it's used as a last resort for people with real health issues. It's a bit dystopian to imagine a world where most people are hooked on a drug for life because they lack discipline. A lack of discipline will manifest itself in other ways in their lives.

As far as I understand, Ozempic greatly helps in curbing appetite. Well, one can easily indulge in fiber, water, and maybe even DNF-10 (Fytexia) to help curb appetite. At least you won't have to deal with possible suicidal thoughts.

They are wired to eat less. That's life for some people. My wife will spend all day without eating, like 15 hours, and then have a single ramen cup and be fine. A lot of times we will order dinner, and she will fall asleep before the food is delivered, sleeps all night, and will not want breakfast the next day. I on the other hand am always hungry.

I tried taking the pill version of ozempic. It makes you feel full without eating. Issue is that if you eat even a normal amount, it will make you feel like vomiting, like you ate way too much. I had issues getting even 200 grams of protein at 2500 cals. I stopped after 2 weeks, I'd rather be hungry than nauseous all day.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

I have read little about the diabetes weight loss drugs, but have figured that is how they work.

A low carb diabetes diet works that way. When eating fewer carbs/sugar to help control blood sugar levels, you feel fuller and as a result eat less. At least that is how the diet is promoted.

These drugs are already being investigated for terrible side effects, including people ending up in the emergency room, and in the morgue.

you have got to be an unimaginable moron to even consider using something like this regardless of anything else.
