We're reached a breaking point where fast food just isn't even worth it anymore

Got Jimmy John's the other day. Mye expectations are never high of places like that, but the portions for the price were obscene. Got a sub that was maybe 2/3rd's as big as I remember them making them 10 - 15 years ago, and the subs are like $9 apiece. What they sell for ~$10 now would have gone for ~$5 back then.

This seems to be true across the board anytime I get fast food. Lower portions, lower quality ingredients, and higher prices. Might as well make a sandwich from grocery store lunch meats and bread at this point, as it's 1/10th the cost and not even that much worse anymore.

I can go to the local Chinese takeout and get chicken rice and vegetables (big enough for two meals) for $10.50 or go to Mcdonalds and have Shanequa mess up my $9 meal of garbage and then get an attitude. No thanks, I'll stick with the local places and get takeout.

The Whole Foods hot bar and salad bar is now cheaper than Jimmy Johns. And it has real meats, veggies, etc, with calories listed for you and everything.

Agreed. Go to your local bar/restaurant and get a much better meal for less. Plus slam a few beers and try to pick up some bar sloots. Well worth the wait.

I used to eat Jimmy John’s a lot, at least a few times per month. Legitimately haven’t walked through the door of one in like 12 years.

It was always low quality garbage, but it was cheap. I have no idea what it costs now, but as soon as they were bought by the Private Equity company the price doubled, and it just wasn’t even remotely worth it.

Wanted to order late night Mexican not from Taco Bell. A burrito and taco was going to cost $56 on Door Dash. Fuk that. Burrito was 20 and taco was like 15-17. The other 15 or so was fuking fees/tip.

yeah it's crazy man. some fast food places are cheap like taco bell especially if they have deals and specials. but some of these other places are marked up like crazy. lmao @ tipping people if my combo meal is like $25-$30. INB4 I'm a poorcel. It's not even that the meal is that much better or anything special. Fries alone at some places is like $6-$7 alone.

I'm pretty sure they just buy some McCain superfries in bulk from the grocery store, deep fry it and maybe add a bit of salt and cajun to it and mark it up for 10x the price lmao. This sounds poor af but I'll basically just put fries in the oven or something and add my own seasonings and sauces and I buy my own sodas from the grocery store instead of a combo. Both $1 worth of ingredients at most instead of the $7-8 you are paying.

I remember back in the days in highschool (around 2005). At the school cafeteria fries and gravy was like $2. A rib sandwich was $3.50 (dedsrs).

For real. $20 at McDonald's vs $20 all you can eat shrimp at Red Lobster or a $12 meal at Cheddar's.

I had a LOT of meals away from home the past week. Drove to the coast, stayed 3 nights in a room w/just a mini fridge and drove back.

- Whataburger: one regular whataburger + one double junior...no drinks or fries = $12

- HEB grocery store, ready to eat section: usually solid, but this was trash- daughter got a sushi roll $10, and a butter chicken entree ? and I got a salad with chicken and cheese on top...sushi roll she said was gross and it went in the trash [not surprised, discouraged this, but she really wanted to try it], she ate the butter chicken but wasn't too happy with it...the chicken and cheese on the top of the salad was fine but the lettuce under was quite bad...mostly trash = $30

- Golden Chick 3 strips w/fries and a drink for the kid = $10

- HEB grocery store: tried getting stuff to make sandwiches in the room...quarter pound each of ham and turkey, 4 slices of cheese, salad dressing, loaf of bread, bag of chips = $14 not bad value, but didn't like the bread...just rolled up cheese and meat

- McD's ice cream cone...was at loose ends while daughter was visiting with her friend in Austin = $2.34

^^^
What? They used to go on special all the time for .50 and regular price was about $1.

There just isn't a lot of good value to be found easily IME. A meal for one person is running $10 or better unless you can find a fast food/entree only that is less expensive, like just a sandwich, or just a couple of tacos.

ETA: the junior burger was the best, but we had to wait 20 minutes or so after we ordered to get it

actually going out to eat in general is vastly overrated now. every single place is expensive and the quality has dropped off from even places that are normally good. yes you still have top tier places, but upper mid type of places are a no go for me now most of the time. i'm not even a good cook really and alot of the time i'm left feeling like "eh, i could of done this for half the price myself and it'd have been as good." service is absolute **** too nowadays.

hyperinflation is bananas right now.

Luckily I'm the age now where I think about how my health is impacted by eating that chit even once per week.

My weekly crock pot chili recipe with an avocado on the side is the foundation of my diet (beans, tomato, onion, peppers, chicken breast) nowadays.

I'm doing blood labs in 6 weeks with the intention of cancelling health insurance next year if I have A+ numbers on the blood lab.

Healthcare spending in the USA accounts for 18% of our GDP, and we have the lowest life expectancy of all 1st world countries.

At some point, we Americans have to take our health into our own hands..... Big pharma isn't helping.

in 2021, life expectancy in the USA was 76 years old.... So this chart needs updating:

I'd rather order food from a diner than fast food. Better value for the money.
