A better rule of thumb is if you would openly talk about the subject to your coworkers in the breakroom at work. If you have any hesitation in doing so then its probably (at least indirectly) a subject that can be interpreted as racism

Except it was so much more than bathrooms and waterfountains. It was institutions like college admissions and segregated hospitals. If you were a minority during that time (not just black but any race other than white) you had an increase risk of dying if you were not near a hospital that "served your kind." It was very rare for hospitals to be run by minority staff because they also weren't allowed to get a college degree to learn the skills to treat people in their community. Ironically if a white person was injured or sick and the nearest hospital was a "colored" hospital, they would be accepted as a patient, but never the other way around. It didn't help that all levels of government were ran by white people that only passed legislation to look after their own which meant white people were of a perpetually "privileged class"

It was a circular catch-22. Minorities weren't allowed to be admitted in white hospitals. The only hospitals minorities could go to were ones that were run by other minorities, but they also weren't allowed into college to learn healthcare to work in a hospital. That is why HBCUs exist.

Everyone is racist, is just that some people are honest about it, while others are race grifters who put on the fake empathy facade but only for personal gain. Usually in the form of status points that come from the approval from others or straight up monetary gain.
