Tim Walz left National Guard battalion ‘hanging,’ ‘slithered out the door’ before Iraq deployment: vets

Veterans have accused Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz of “embellishing” his military career and abandoning his National Guard battalion, highlighting that the now-vice presidential pick for the Democrats never served in combat and retired from service ahead of his unit’s 2005 deployment to Iraq.

In a letter posted to ******** in 2018 as he first ran for governor, retired Command Sergeants Major Thomas Behrends and Paul Herr said Walz retired from his 24-year tenure in the National Guard after learning that his battalion would be deployed to Iraq, despite allegedly assuring his fellow troops he would join them.

After 24 years who can blame him.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

we always hear the cool-bro stories of action and adventure.....but wonder how many young men/women who suffered terrible injuries from WAR wish they would have had themselves declared unfit for WAR due to suffering a bone-spur?

How many times did Trump dodge military service? Again he doesn't know when to keep his big mouth shut, when it will come back to bite him in the ass, as a multiple draft dodger who used daddies money to avoid it five times.

Trump never bragged about serving lmao. Walz is borderline stolen valor, the media in Minn tried to hide it. His crew hates his ass. He even lied that he served in war, the dude never did:

dude is getting exposed.

He also signed a bill that sexual orientation included ****philia:

guy is a freaking nutjob. If the media had any integrity at all, he wouldn't last a week as VP.

How is serving for nearly 25 years dodging? Just comes off as a cheap attack from jealous soldiers & being pushed by Dump-who made up a phony foot injury & college excuses to not be drafted. I have no issue with people avoiding the draft/serving, but somebody who never served going after the military record of a guy who did for 24 years & rose to a very high rank?

“He was a great soldier,” Joseph Eustice, who served 32 years in the National Guard, told the Star Tribune in 2022. “When he chose to leave, he had every right to leave,” added Eustice, who indicated that other attacks on Walz’s record may have been made by disgruntled soldiers who were passed up for promotions.

Another National Guard member who served under Walz said that the future US lawmaker was eyeing a run for Congress earlier than 2005.“Would the soldier look down on him because he didn’t go with us? Would the common soldier say, ‘Hey, he didn’t go with us, he’s trying to skip out on a deployment?’ And he wasn’t,” Al Bonnifield recalled to Minnesota Public Radio of Walz’s concerns about dipping out before the deployment to Iraq.

“He talked with us for quite a while on that subject. He weighed that decision to run for Congress very heavy [sic],” Bonnifeld added. “He loved the military, he loved the guard, he loved the soldiers he worked with.” “We all do what we can. I’m proud I did 24 years,” Walz has said about his service.

Then again this isn't the first time he has done it-he went after Republican John McCain's military record, called him a loser, said he liked soldiers that didn't get captured etc. This is what he thinks of soldiers & should leave people in no illusion of what a self serving pos he is-

When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, near Paris, in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true.

Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.

On at least two occasions since becoming president, according to three sources with direct knowledge of his views, Trump referred to former President George H. W. Bush as a “loser” for being shot down by the Japanese as a Navy pilot in World War II. (Bush escaped capture, but eight other men shot down during the same mission were caught, tortured, and executed by Japanese soldiers.)

The attack line is so stupid for obvious reasons but, but also even if he had deployed to Iraq, surely at that rank he wouldn't have been going out on patrols with the grunts, he'd be sat behind a desk in the green zone?

Yep, he was a leader-they were not going to put a 40 year old on the front line charging at Allauh Akbars.

Very leaderish, signing up to lead and then bailing on 500 or so subordinates when it’s time to go to war, don’t you think?

You’re only partially correct on E9 being a desk job, it’s a critical position in the soldier hierarchy that’s very hands on in the day to day welfare of soldiers (especially in combat arms).

I can think of few things more embarrassing/humiliating getting busted for embellishing or self exalting one's military*experiences*.

How he defends that statement and how the public perceives it as time goes on will certainly be interesting to hear.
Another claim of "Oh, I must have misspoke".
Only a politician could come up with that, quite unconvincing, response.

Carry on.

I am sure they had an able replacement ready-as said he had already been discussing this possibility with the men for a long time.

What has he actually said? Can't find a direct quote.

Understand he was deployed overseas as part of Enduring Freedom but not into a combat zone. Seems like this is a case of civilians wrongly assuming that just because you didn't personally sit in a trench firing bullets at the enemy this means you didn't serve.
