Welcome to the12th edition of the Trading and Investing Thread!
This will perhaps be one of the wildest markets and financial times in the past century. We will see what the effects of central bank intervention and negative interest rates have done to the world and how this will affect their role moving forward.
US Shares markets have collapsed 30% in a month due to Coronavirus pandemic fears and governments putting aside business and economic functionality in order to try and contain the virus, or so they say.
We will be monitoring the EU and see if BREXIT was just the beginning and if there is still confidence that the Union will last, or will it dismantle and become yet another failed experiment and attempt to nationalize Europe?
The 2020 elections in the US will see rising political discontent as there is no more civility left. Will either side accept the results of the election or will there be riots and unrest following them?
Is there a crisis in liquidity in the bonds market? With the ECB being the sole purchaser of bonds in the EU, what will happen when they stop buying them? Have they technically destroyed the bond market?
The stock market is a game of capital flows and confidence. Know where the safe havens and troubles lie, and you will know what rises and falls.
Good luck, and may your emotions always be kept at bay. Make sound, emotionless decisions, and ask questions!

I'm getting double fuked today from tech and metals. The dollar is up 0.50%+ and looks to be climbing, at least until another fake stimulus pump. Going to buy a bit of NET though since it dropped with FSLY.

I wonder if SEC is doing jackshiit with insider trading.
There is volume on fasly that nobody would ever buy without knowing stock would be tanking 35%.
36,000 percent gains should set off alarm bells.
................
maybe Zoom shiits the bed on earnings and tanks hard. it looks like its so overbought right now.

For options and spreads I cant use margin on robinhood. For example it will tell me buying power is 10k, but I have 5k "cash". When I try to open spreads or whatever im limited to my "cash"
Edit:
Can anyone confirm if their brokers lets them use margin for options such as cash covered puts?

Margin works a little differently for options though. Your buying power will be whatever cash you have in your account, but the buying power they hold from your account is greatly reduced in a margin account. It's not a loan to use towards securities like with stocks (though that is also included). I think for most stocks it only holds about 20% of the option value as a rough average. Certain high risk underlyings could be more and the amount held can fluctuate based on changes in the market, but as an example yesterday I sold a naked put in WBA at $35 strike and it only reduced my buying power by mid $600 something vs a cash secured put that would have held $3,330.

I'm getting the max match I can out of my company's 401k and trying to keep contributions to a Roth to max that as well. I have a couple small taxable accounts as well that I'm mostly just trading off of old balances before I buckled down and opened my Roth. I think I'm on the right track to be in a decent position in my old age, but man it's a real bummer thinking about where I could be if I had been smarter earlier on and either retiring early or much more comfortably when I do. What's worse is that I'm an accountant and know this chit and knew better. lol. I just didn't prioritize it early on and kept putting it off. Oh well.Gotta say, I really enjoy watching what the younger bros do here and love that you're thinking about growing your worth early on. The vast majority of my investments are in my 401k (pretty much only choices are limited mutual funds) and a taxable Etrade account that is very much skewed to index/mutual funds (SPY,VTSAX, TRBCX primarily). I've been playing a little bit with some individual stocks, but a pretty small gain in those other funds tends to be a chitload more $$ than a huge gain in the individual stocks. But I'm trying to pick up some knowledge along the way to improve my retirement nest egg. That's looming closer than I care to think about.
I was a little later to the game than I'd have preferred. Started saving/investing close to 32 years old. But got more aggressive as soon as I was able. Can tell you that there's a lot I wish I paid more attention to early on and was more intricately involved in with regard to research and strategies. I would probably have been a little further along than I am now. But I'm in pretty good shape for the shape I'm in.
Funny part is . . . if you would have told me when I was 20 that I'd have the investments that I have now by my current age, I would have been pretty thrilled with it. But actually being there, it doesn't seem like nearly enough. Start early. Be consistent. Invest in yourself before you invest in "stuff" you could do without. It will pay off.

i don't get why people don't put their money in the market
i mean, if covid was the "great depression" of 2000s and the SPY is still going up, what the **** else is going to stop this monster from going even higher?
