Colorado bill SB-42 passed states senate today
https://www.9news.com/article/news/c...b-39b76e76ec9b
This is insane. The usual political antics are common throughout American history but I cannot recall any time such drastic ideas were implemented.
The electoral college is specifically designed to protect states with a minority of voters. Now the 'party of minorities' is trying to silence minorities.
Edit: More info
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) is an agreement among a group of U.S. states and the District of Columbia to award all their electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the overall popular vote in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The compact is designed to ensure that the candidate who wins the most popular votes is elected president, and it would come into effect only when it would guarantee that outcome.[2][3] As of January 2019, it has been adopted by eleven states and the District of Columbia. Together, they have 172 electoral votes, which is 32.0% of the Electoral College and 63.7% of the votes needed to give the compact legal force.
Jurisdictions enacting law to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact No. Jurisdiction Current Electoral votes (EV) Date adopted
1 Maryland 10 April 10, 2007
2 New Jersey 14 January 13, 2008
3 Illinois 20 April 7, 2008
4 Hawaii 4 May 1, 2008
5 Washington 12 April 28, 2009
6 Massachusetts 11 August 4, 2010
7 District of Columbia 3 December 7, 2010
8 Vermont 3 April 22, 2011
9 California 55 August 8, 2011
10 Rhode Island 4 July 12, 2013
11 New York 29 April 15, 2014
12 Connecticut 7 May 24, 2018
Total 172 (63.7% of the 270 EVs needed)
The bill - SB 42 - would tie Colorado's Electoral College votes to the outcome of the national popular vote once enough states adopt similar laws. Once 270 electoral votes-worth of states join the movement, the president will be chosen by whoever receives the most votes nationally, according to the nonprofit National Popular Vote.
The bill now needs to pass Colorado house of representatives. This is insane. The usual political antics are common throughout American history but I cannot recall any time such drastic ideas were implemented.

Won’t happen.
If they try it, get ready for 1776.

we should be governing for the majority
the electoral college allows minority populations to have a disproportionately large voice
whats wrong with popular vote? is it because most of the country is liberal?

Since gays are a minority and the majority are straight what is the problem with banning gay marriage?

and you can ban gay marriage all you want - as long as a majority supports it. last i checked plenty of straight people support gay marriage too. if only every straight person voted to ban gay marriage!

It's about the majority not being able to oppress the minority. Poors shouldn't get to tax the rich and rich shouldn't get to abuse the poor.

half the country didn't even vote last election.
I know plenty of republicans in NY who would vote if they knew their vote actually counted.
it currently doesn't because of too many welfare recipients who vote dem.

you guys just dont like the idea of governing for the majority, which confuses me. i guess id be against it to if i were in the minority.
its better to govern in a way that 60% of the population wants.
its worse to govern in a way that 40% of the population wants.
its really simple

So basically, an entire state’s votes don’t even really matter.
