I tried to post as non-partisan as possible. I've been exposed to Trump for a lot longer than you, and I don't think he's a low IQ idiot. He's certainly no genius but that's not the point. Imagine that someone well-known today, but known as an entertainer not politician, academic, deep thinker, etc. someone like Mark Cuban for example. He becomes the most influential person in the entire world. And even Cuban doesn't seem as improbable to someone like me since prior to Trump Reagan was really the only "celebrity" politician and he was a governor first. It's bizarre.

You misunderstand - the majority of what Trump has said and done over the past 2 years is what has cemented him as a joke, and as a result, when he makes silly blunders like this people will poke fun at him rather than turning a blind eye to it. He's acted and performed like a clown, so people will treat him like a clown, simple as.
