It already is the economic superpower. The only thing the U.S. has is military superiority really, it's even behind the EU on terms of GDP (PPP).

I think most of us hit below the belt from time to time, so none of us can try and take the high ground there. It's all good man.

That's how I feel, too. We're all guilty of derailing a thread with personal jabs, but this seems a bit more worthy of a PM or separate thread.

The U.S. isn't losing superpower status any time soon, you don't need to be paranoid about that.

I'm all for the U.S. looking for better or fairer trade deals but seriously, this worldwide economic aggression is not the right way to do it.

This trade war is mainly driven by Trump's ego, campaign promises and business background.

Just do it in a civil way around a table and don't take on the biggest economies in the world at the same time.

I get it, but it's not nearly as bad as that. The main problem Trump specifically has is he thinks the U.S. is responsible for world security but other countries aren't paying in as much money or investing in their own defence using U.S. defence as a proxy.

He thinks countries should pay "protection money", pay more into NATO or have "sacrificial lamb" trade deals to pay for it i.e. the U.S. should get the better end of every trade deal.

This is why Comey said he runs the country like he's a mob boss.

In reality though, this line of thinking has been tried before under GWB and it was a rude awakening to find out that economically, the U.S. does not have that clout.

If you go into China with aircraft carriers, you'll have a point, but economically this is just going to hurt Americans.

Clinton administration moves to impose punitive tariffs on Japanese, Brazilian steel imports

By Shannon Jones
17 February 1999

In a sign of mounting global economic tensions, the Clinton administration has formally declared Japan and Brazil guilty of dumping under-priced steel on the American market and announced the imposition of prohibitive duties against those countries' steel exports.

Clinton Advisers Back Punitive Japan Tariffs : Trade: Import tax could hit luxury cars, minivans and auto parts. U.S. seeks opening of Japanese market.
http://articles.latimes.com/1995-05-...ese-auto-parts
President Bill Clinton's willingness to start a transatlantic trade war over bananas is proving to be anything but wise. On March 3, the President imposed duties of 100 percent on $520 million worth of popular European products, such as Waterford crystal and Italian pecorino cheese. The duties are supposed to punish the European Union (EU) for disregarding a 1997 World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling that it change its preferential policy favoring banana exports from countries in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.

Because of the President's action, hundreds of American and European companies that have nothing to do with bananas now face trade sanctions that will price them out of the U.S. market. The duties will affect a wide range of European products, including cashmere sweaters, greeting cards, coffee makers, chocolates, biscuits, pasta, bath oils, candles, handbags, and ham. The government will start collecting the duties on April 12, the day a WTO dispute settlement panel is expected to rule on U.S. charges that the EU's policy change still does not comply with WTO rules. Meanwhile, because U.S. importers of these products will have to post a bond equivalent to the sanctions, they already may have begun to curtail their imports.

The President's protectionist response not only undermines the authority and principles of the WTO, but also is straining relations with many of the countries involved.

AGRICULTURAL DISASTER IN HAITI

CLINTON DESTROYS STRUCTURE OF HAITIAN RICE FARMING

Since his invasion in 1994, Clinton has completely destroyed the structure of Haitian agriculture. In 1995 he forced the nation to drop tariffs on rice imported from America. Haiti dropped its import tariffs on rice from 50% to 3%. Clinton claimed this move would help Haiti jump into the "Industrial Era." Yet even before Clinton took this action, experts were well aware of the consequences:

All these things you see as "issues" I see as beneficial to the USA. God forbid the President of America does everything he can to get the best for his country. WHAT A MOB BOSS!

Not getting into specifics but NATO members all agreed to pay a certain percentage and nobody is. How is asking for the amount they agreed to pay "protection money?"

I guess that's the difference between you and I. I'm pro-American. I wouldn't necessarily label you Anti-American, but just drifting in the wind while other nations take advantage of us, while trying to better their country off our backs, is pretty Anti-American. But I guess that's just mainstream liberalism for ya.

Nah I am frequently wrong. But google is the ultimate arbiter. So we shall see. Its fascinating to see this sudden allegiance to american products and american workers though. For years I was told they were lazy. Products were chitty. etc.

So what are your thoughts on the Apple product you are using? Not only is the iOS superior, its pretty nice buying a product and seeing the profits flow to america. I saw some dude using a Samsung phone and I was all I could do to not rage at him for being a traitor.

We have more jobs and expansion created from the tax cut plan then our labor market can even handle,

People won’t be without jobs if they are willing to work, and their wages will also be higher if they are willing to work.

I disagree with most of the tarrifs, but if you want to do a trade war now is the time - being that if jobs are lost there will be other jobs to accommodate for them immediately just not in the same industry.

And if I’m wrong and the tarrifs work then those industries will indeed expand either way we win
