The problem with voter ID is that it's very difficult to design a law that the courts dont see as a poll tax.

Why not this? I'm fine with voter ID, but why not have a few days in a row so if you're stuck working or something comes up that day, you can still make it the 2nd or 3rd day.

Why not please everyone.

Make Election day a weekend starting Friday, that Friday is a federal holiday, Sat and Sun are also voting election days. Polls open 7a to 8p. Each day.

Valid ID is required to vote, only citizens may vote, no provisional ballots. Without proper ID you cannot vote, if getting proper ID to vote was not a priority for you then neither is voting.

Make sure that each state has the proper easily accessible (open on nights/weekends)facilities for people to get Valid ID for voting for free or a VERY small fee like 5$, proof of citizenship required.

In Australia, voting is on a Saturday, and it's compulsory, so that employers have to give you time to do it. However, you can vote before election day if you won't be able to make it to a polling booth on the day. They just don't count any of the votes before close of polling across the country.

Electoral rolls are kept, with your name and address. On arriving to vote you give your name and address, they ask if you've voted already, and they give you the ballot papers and cross your name off. At this point you can either take the papers and go and vote, or leave the polling centre without having cast your vote and nobody can do anything, so that in practice voting isn't compulsory, just getting your name checked off is compulsory. After the election they check to see that everyone's voted, and that you didn't vote twice.

About 95% of eligible people are registered to vote, and 90-95% of them actually vote on the day. Generally those not registered are people who only turned 18 after the last election. Turnout is lower in local than state elections, and lower in state than federal elections. Failure to vote is generally carelessness or apathy rather than conscientious objection, and is more common among younger and lower income people.

Multiple voting is very rare, and in almost all cases is things like an older person in a nursing home voting in the morning at a mobile booth brought to them, and then voting again in the afternoon when the family comes and takes them out for a visit somewhere. In no case in the entire history of Federation has it determined even a single seat in an election.

All this is accomplished by means of an independent electoral commission. There is one federally, and one for each state. They keep the rolls, draw electoral boundaries based on the latest census data, and conduct the elections. Parties send observers to watch the count. There are recounts for each district, and extra recounts if it's within a few hundred votes. Any disputes go to the High Court sitting as the Court of Disputed Returns. In the 2016 federal election a few thousand Western Australia votes for the federal Senate were lost, and the Court of Disputed Returns ordered the entire vote to be held again.

Over the years there have been a number of changes to the way Australians vote, from the introduction of compulsory voting to preferential voting to the Hare-Clark system for the federal Senate and to the abolition of Queensland's Upper House. In each case, the party of the government of the day brought about the change because they thought it would advantage them. In each case, within ten years the change actually disadvantaged them.

Obviously at this time the Republicans in the US believe that more people voting would disadvantage them, and the Democrats believe that voter ID laws would disadvantage them. I suspect that were either brought in, within ten years it would give a disadvantage to the party which previously supported it. Countries change quicker than political parties do.

Whatever else you do, the US needs independent electoral commissions. You should not be able to have it that the person in charge of the integrity of the election is also in charge of the campaign of a candidate in it, as in Florida in 2000. I understand that this is a hard concept for Americans to grasp culturally, since you even elect your judges. But there it is: an independent electoral commission works better in ensuring an electoral process with integrity. Leave the crookedness to the politicians, not the electoral process itself.

there are plenty of options to vote for those who want to....

we don't need more uneducated voters, who don't even try to make an effort to vote, to storm the polls.
I wonder which party is the one that is trying to get as much uneducated and uninformed voters to get the voting booths... i wonder why.

Lmao if you think that voter fraud is a bigger issue than people either not wanting to wait out the ballot lines after work or not finding time to vote.

Deal, as long as private employers are legally required to allow their employees to vote during the day.

lol @ you determining who's qualified to vote and who isnt. everyone should vote, age 18+

the higher the voter turnout, the better our democracy functions.

republicans love their voter suppression and gerrymandering to rig the elections (and now they're full into blown foreign collusion) because they know their views are wildly unpopular with the nation as a whole.

Everyone should be able to vote who can prove they are a citizen and have a legal government issued ID.

It's okay though, I understand your frustration. Without illegal votes, the Democrats wouldn't ever win another election.

That's a pretty serious allegation, got any proof? Because we know that CNN and the DNC sure don't have any, no matter how hard they've tried in vain the past nearly 3 years.

Democrats, if it were up to them, would play their voter ID games, too. If it were up to their shrewdest strategists, you certainly wouldn't be able to use a CCW license as voter ID, but you could definitely use a university ID (I bring up these two because in Texas it's the opposite lol).

I don't know, but Voter ID is just supposed to be proof that you are who you say you are, that no one is voting in your stead. We give driver's licenses out to legal non-citizens all the time, for instance.
