Responses like this is what give atheists a bad name. I have had great philosophical conversations with atheists but then there's plenty of them, especially online, just insult instead of debate
You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! - Stallone

I don't measure a man's success by how high he climbs but how high he bounces when he hits bottom - Patton

Atheist spouse and I was raised evangelical Christian, but now agnostic for lack of a better word.

I also think that the community that comes from church is valuable and atheism doesn't have a corresponding equivalent.
Yeah, pretty much my take on it. Let my daughter go with her grandma sometimes, but didn't want her to be indoctrinated like I was.

Let me ask you a simple question (though I know what the answer is different to depending on what context is being used). Is the USA a country founded on Christian principles and by and large a Christian nation with by and large Christian leaders?
Not directed @ me but since no one answered AFAIK they (the founders) were largely theists, but not necessarily Christian.

I don’t follow God out of fear but rather out of respect and because I trust He knows better than the rest of us fallible, mortal beings.
Already addressed ITT, but religion does change all the time to fit society. Heck, arguing about which rules to keep and which ones to overlook is the biggest part of most schisms/aka spin offs/aka denominations.

God didn't kill Job's family because they were flawed, he killed them to prove a point.

He didn't kill the first born Egyptians because of a flaw, he killed them to prove his power to the pharaoh in an elaborate display

Apparently almost every human on earth had some major flaw and had to drown.

An all powerful, all loving God routinely kills people that are not his chosen people, for any reason. If anyone else did this, you would call them evil. Because the bible says God is good, we have to believe these acts are good.

The problem with that is according to the bible, we all inherently have knowledge of good and evil, so we should know it in our hearts when we see and hear evil. If I mention the holocaust, no one would bat an eye at calling Hitler evil. Flood the entire world and kill everyone because they didn't love you enough, no one bats an eye.
Right there with you. For me it was also "our version of Christianity is the right one and all the other people (even Christians) are condemned", so if you never were exposed to this flavor of faith then too bad, or if you were raised with some other version too bad. Add that to "created in his image" + "knew you in your mother's womb (sounds like predestination) + "loving father" + "can't abide those who miss the mark (sin) so they must be cast out to suffer eternally" = ???

There are parts of my religious upbringing that I like and would be comforting to believe, but so much cognitive dissonance.

If your religion works for you and isn't harming anyone else it's all good. Only a problem if it is used as a justification to control/harm other people.

So you don't have an answer to my question. Instead you deflect with an unrelated question. Duly noted.

No I’m a proud atheist, I feel no need to hedge my bets with agnosticism ..I know I’m a good person

I believe in the human spirit

If death proves me wrong then your everloving god would be proud of me for what I do in my belief in humanity. If my lack of faith causes me to burn in your purgatory then he’s an evil little psychopath which means your belief is still wrong

There are levels to it.

An algorithm would look like nonsense to a child who has learned their addition and subtraction facts. Yet it is not nonsense - it is just a higher level of understanding is needed.

So, you apply what you know. It works. Learn more. Apply it. It works. Learn more. Apply it (and so on and so forth).

When you have a lifetime's worth of "oh, now i get it!" And it works, you believe, and grow in that belief.

I had over 20 years of exposure to the bible and its teachings and, at the end of the day, I find it totally unbelievable. It's one of those books that a person can choose to believe, can have faith in believing, but logically there is no reason to believe it is factual.

This. It's not something you can apply logic to. That's what the whole faith thing is about. In order to believe what's in it, you need blind faith.

We don't have talking snakes, magically appearing food, disembodied voices coming from bushes, angel wrestling, the ability to survive in a whale's mouth, etc. in our time. To believe any of that even happened you have to just forget what you know to be logical and just believe.
I'm back, bitches!
