Can't wait for the draft even though my Goff dreams have been cruelly crushed to the point where we're probably going to face this kid twice a year which means I have to root to be wrong about him

I thought 2017 would be the year we're back in the playoff hunt if we drafted Goff this year but with questions at QB I'm not sure if we'll have a good enough team to do it then.

Curious to see what Kelly can do with the offense and how it impacts the D.

Saw an ElMariachi mock draft he posted on webzone post Rams trade and it looked damn good.
Basically adds starters at OT, OG and DE/NT to strengthen up our trenches and bring other depth/development guys at other positions.

No QB means that's probably what we should be looking to do and hope we can find a QB either later in the draft or next year.

Even with Goff I think it would be about 2 years before we see the playoffs again. Might as well work on making the trenches stronger.

Even if they drafted Goff i would've liked him to sit this season and take over the job in 2017. Definitely anyone they draft now will be a project.

Hopefully Chip Kelly does a better job than Tomsula did. We can't really have a worse season than last year at least.

No way it could be worse than last year lol, don't think that is even possible.

Also I noticed draft isn't as late as last year, I think its the 28th of April for day 1. Not too far away.

Why not?

Which good quarterback didn't start their first year besides Rodgers? You draft a guy in the 1st round you think he's ready to play.

I hope we keep Kaepernick and Kelly runs him into the ground with 1500 yards rushing and 2500 passing…

I don't want a rookie QB in this years class.

Because lots of pretty talented prospects at the position were rushed to start before they were really ready or while their team was awful to the point that it ruined their long term potential.

We have Gabbert signed for next season which makes him the best person to start next year. This allows the rookie to sit and learn under Kelly and allows the 49ers to get their kinks out on offense and identify who the best players are. Lots of salary cap space next year and likely another decent pick to draft more talent for the young QB to use the following year.

I disagree.

Plenty of good quarterbacks had rough rookie years on dreadful offenses and came back strong the following year. Look at Carr and Bortles. Both made huge leaps last year. Good quarterbacks figure it out. I'm not one of those people that think Rodgers wouldn't have been amazing if the 9ers drafted him. He would've been the same great QB imo.

Sure some guys figure it out. But how many get ruined and don't which maybe if given a bit more time before being thrown into a horrible squad would turn into good players?

If the rookie beats out the guy ahead of him it's one thing. But to throw him out there just because you drafted him early doesn't make sense and you're risking him not being able to handle the punishment early on. You could make the case that those guys would never have success but I'd rather not risk it.

How many of those can you name? If they can't figure it out after 3-4 years then they just aren't good. It has nothing to do with how bad the offense is their rookie year.

Look at Alex Smith. Guy got crushed his rookie year and stunk it up. Now he's a veteran and is arguably one of the tougher QB's in the league.

Oh really? He succeeds when he is surrounded by an outstanding team. He is average at best and that is saying a lot. Lol….

For a starting quarterback he is somewhere near average, but considering how atrocious he was his rookie year he's made quite the improvement.

Not sure what your point is.

Go back and read your post. You say he is one of the thoughest Qbs in the league. I say different and everyone in here agrees. You tried to make a point about Qbs being able to adapt and put it together. Your example was Alex smith?

Lol no. I just used him as an example because this is a 49ers discussion. Did you skip the part where I mentioned Carr and Bortles? Alex has come a long ways since his rookie season.

Point is that nobody can prove that guys that had rough rookie seasons that it hindered their career. And I could bring up plenty of quarterbacks who struggled mightily their rookie season and turned out good.

If you draft a QB in the 1st round then he's ready to go. I don't even remember the last time a top 10 QB pick didn't start week 1.

That's a bit of a loaded question because we know these guys didn't pan out so I can throw out a bunch of names but you can just laugh and say they would've been a bust even if they sat for 1-3 years.

Tim Couch and David Carr jump out though. Both guys were pretty good prospects but went to awful expansion teams and took a beating after having to basically be THE guy for each franchise. That's a heavy burden to bear for some guys.

As for as Alex Smith he may have the mental fortitude to shake off what happened to him but not sure he's the best example because sitting him that rookie season likely would've been the best thing for him with the 49ers. The team actually tried in a way because Alex didn't start right away.

We're installing a new offense, have question marks on the OL and with our receivers. Even if we were able to land Goff or Wentz best thing for their long term development is to let them sit as long as possible this season.
