I’m not afraid of failure....
Like many of you, my initial gut response to “what are you afraid of?” is failure. But that isn’t the case.
I’m afraid of other people knowing I failed. And the shame and judgement that brings. Failing, and the imagined perception of people knowing I failed are two completely different and distinguishable things.
I can fail all day long. I only learn from it. That is easy.
But people knowing I failed, on the surface seems to be hard.
But they don’t give a **** man. No one gives a ****. I am worried about the image I give, and nothing more, and so are they. So we are not focused on each others failures. Only our own. I don’t give a **** about yours, and you don’t give a **** about mine.
I think I care about how you care about mine, but that is all bull****.
The only reason why someone would care about anyone else’s shortcomings, is because they are trying to deflect from their own.
Not counting the legitimate uncommon unhealthy behavior which needs to be addressed for the better of society as a whole, my inability to reach intended goals, within the intended ambiguous parameters I set for myself, is meaningless to you. Unless of course you want to point them out so you don’t have to focus on your own.
My biggest fear disappears within this mindset. I never was afraid of failing, and no one else cares if I do.
**** it man. I might even try to become a pilot in the military. What do I have to lose? Temporary self pity? Okay.
What is the second biggest fear you have, because failure literally isn’t an option. It is the essence of humanity.

I once read a book about fear of failure where the authors described FOF in a very similar fashion to Opie, i.e. fear of failure is in large part a social judgement thing.
The book talked about some interesting experiments they did on folks with a self-diagnosed high fear of failure. They found that these guys would shirk achievable but difficult challenges, but they would be quite happy to undertake nigh-on impossible challenges, which begs the question - why? Well, when a challenge is nigh-on impossible, you get respect whether you lose or you fail. There is no social judgement for failure in such a case.
For example, let’s say you’re at school and you get dared by your buddies to ask out the hottest girl in your year. If she says yes, you get mad respect, if she says no, your buddies still commend you for having the balls to try. It’s a win-win.

What didn't bother me was failing at things, the most difficult thing to deal with was being humiliated for trying and failing.
Some people want to hear a person's story even if they've failed because they find the experience of the endeavour itself interesting, but sometimes people express open contempt or mockery for people who don't succeed.
One of the best things I saw about the fear of failure was the series called Losers on Netflix;
It focused on the people (as you can guess by the title) who never reached the top of their sport, despite giving it their blood, sweat and tears. It focused on the experience of trying, and the growth that they got from it.

I agree as long as you have nothing to lose because of trying. Sometimes, trying alone means lots of sacrifice, which may affect others too.

It all depends on what you define as failure.

There always is a silver lining between success and failure
once you realize you can bounce back from anything.
Speaking for myself, it took me over half a century to finally see that. *shrug*

What are your views on stoicism OP?
What are your views on stoicism OP?
I have been participating in eastern philosophies and practices for over a decade. Meditation, seeking being neutrally content instead of positive happiness or the likes, etc.
Once I was introduced to stoicism, a lot of my thought processes and understandings have aligned with it. Of course, reading the popular stoics perspective on issues has provided new and inspiring sound bites that turn complex ideas into basic, easy to understand statements. I appreciate that for sure.
