Can you be “successful” without significant levels of luck?

I think most of us would agree, some degree of luck is required. Or not. Maybe some of us think success can only be achieved through hard work and dedication.

What say you?

People who who work hard to succeed tend to have an inordinate amount of luck that helps them be successful.

Luck as in being born with a silver spoon up your angus?

Most people who do really well have connections/ sponsors and know how to toe the line and pay off who need to be paid off.

Then there are slaves who simply know how to tick boxes and toe the line without questioning.

Others not in the above two categories need to reconsider their options in life seriously.

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity OP.

Fortune favours the bold.

The above quote conceives of Fortune as a deity, who bestows her favours on those with the will to pursue their dreams and ambitions.

I think anyone can be very successful in the US unless they are in like the bottom .5% of luck (major illness/disability, horrible early life circumstances, bad accidents, etc). But yea some people will be handed it and some people will have to work for it but almost anyone can make it imo regardless of circumstances.

Wouldn’t it be weird if some seemingly random and irrelevant factor like birth-month dictated a persons ability to become a professional hockey player?

If this was a thing, do you think the hardworking and dedicated professional hockey players would ever acknowledge it as part of their success?

Nope.

Things that could be considered luck

-wealthy parents
-genetically gifted with a higher iq
-surrounded by people who lift others up and not drag them down
-good schooling/mentors
-discovering a certain book or video that leads you down a certain path
-no health problems

etc..

Even if you're a hard worker and worked your butt off to become successful you still were lucky, as there were factors that led you down that hard working path. And there were certainly things that could have stopped your path if they would have happened. Like your parents dying in a freak car accident and leaving you as an orphan.

Like Anachron said, I think the most significant luck we all share is birthplace.

This, so much this. Success doesn't happen overnight. Honesty, integrity, holding yourself accountable, compassion, and other good character traits that earn you a good reputation with people who count, it does come around and help you. (had a list in my head and it went blank, but along those lines)

Lying, cheating, stealing, backstabbing, ass kissing, making other trouble may seem to have gains especially in the short haul but in the long run it always bites them. It's a small world especially when when you have a bad reputation.

Yep. Hard work alone will not make you as rich as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. No matter what motivational videos and books tell you...

"That also applied to both Bill Gates & Steve Jobs, they were lucky that they lived in 70’s where personal computer was in its infancy & luckily for them that they had just the right friend to found 2 juggernauts of a company, Microsoft & Apple.

Bill Gates was just chilling in Harvard when he was approached by his childhood pal, Paul Allen, about the first PC ever the *****r 8800. They saw a great opportunity by improving its performance with their own basic interpreter so that the *****r could have a software that would enhance its functionality. Bill Gates & Paul Allen’s basic interpreter became popular among computer hobbyists at homebrew computer club back then, together they founded Microsoft, it became the first & ultimately the biggest software company since then."

Steve Jobs...

"Steve Jobs had a pretty identical story with Bill Gates, he & Steve Wozniak was already friends long way before they founded Apple, they became a close friend because of their same passion for electronics. Steve Wozniak was a genius hardware engineer, he single-handedly creates the Apple 1, the first home computer ever that able to display a few letters & running sample programs, it caught the attention of many hobbyists at homebrew computer club. Steve Jobs was really impressed by Wozniak's creation, he asked Woz to sell the computer & found a company with him, together they founded Apple, the biggest company by market cap right now."

https://www.quora.com/Were-Bill-Gate...obs-just-lucky

Not only that, Steve Jobs was lucky thatPublic Enterprisehad produced most of the tech that went into the first Ipod and Iphone...

They were not 'self made'. Complete nonsense.

What is peddled in 'hustle/productivity culture' and capitalist society is survivorship bias.

The idea that hard work is the sole criteria for Bill Gates and Steve Jobs becoming what they did is nonsense, but that is what is peddled to the masses, so you devote your lives to your careers.

if you do something enough times over and over again, your chances of "getting lucky" go up drastically.

i was born in a poor former soviet bloc country, immigrated to canada, worked to pay for university, and now enjoy a good deal of success in my career.

i didnt hit the grand life lottery... the game of life isnt complicated, it just requires you to sacrifice enough of your time and dedication now to enjoy success in the future.

Yes.

Family I grew up in had too much debt and too small of an income to lend much assistance for college.

Pushed myself in high school to get through some honors / Advanced-placement classes.

Graduated high school with a couple of scholarships lined up for college.

Went into a "good major" Computer Science. Didn't have a car so lived near campus walking/biking/skateboarding/busing. Graduated in ~4 years with ~$15k student loan debt. With connections I got a job making $60k at 22 with little benefits. Currently 25 making $73k salary + bonuses (putting me at close to $95k gross this year) + benefits. Paid off student loans, upgraded to a modern car and paid it off too, currently debt free and working on both retirement and non-retirement investments. Net worth is a little over $50k.

I'm a white male in America though so, guess that in itself has its own luck.

I assumed that OP wasn't talking about that level of success, I assumed he was talking about being a millionaire or something. Hard work and savings alone can definitely help significantly in regards to finances.

(saying that though, a lot of people are losing jobs or having wages cut due to the bad luck of 2020, through no fault of their own. Same thing happened in 07/08 after the global economic meltdown.)

However...

Would you agree that it's lucky you had connections who had the means and opportunity to help you get that job? Purely through your own effort, maybe you wouldn't have.

Check my sig if you need support.

You are obviously motivated from reading some "provocative" book and now think you are all that like that Aristotle loser.

Your way of thinking is so 2012. LOL at still believing rubbish.

The more you stick to it, work at it, and the more "stones you turn", the more lucky you become. Over time all those small lucky breaks accumulate into success (and perhaps greatness). All titans had other smaller stuff they did before they become really big.

Read "Good to Great", best study on this and Jeff Bezos favourite book. Great companies had NO "one luck" that made them so. It was all one small piece of a something much bigger

I think the harder you work, the more luck tends to be on your side. That said, it’s not guaranteed and some people just fall into good situations, but by and large, doing your best has no faults.

Definitely think there's some luck at play and being at the right place at the right time. Just looking at my peers, some are waitressing/working very entry level positions while others are doing much better, and everyone has the same graduate degree.

And there were certainly things that could have stopped your path if they would have happened. Like your parents dying in a freak car accident and leaving you as an orphan.
Good points. Even if you have all of those, but chose to be a bum, you'll still be a bum. If you have none of those, but have a good attitude and work hard, work on improving yourself, learning, ect, you'll probably be at least alright. So maybe you'll never be ultra rich, but you'll at least be decent.

What disgusts me is these "whoa is me" *******s who can't seem to even hold a basic job and complain about how their life is but yet 99% of their problems are self-inflicted. The claim the world is against them and how everyone screws them over but after a while of getting to know them you understand why.

"The manlet is a savage beast that knows no moral bound. After falling in disgrace to a manmore, a ravaged manlet would not hesitate to come from behind and land a sucker punch/ swing with a rock to the back of a manmore's head. They are ruthless and you need to spend some more time in the gutter to even begin trying to comprehend what goes on in their minds."
