Ketogenic Diet - Please Share Your Thoughts, Experiences, Resources

I'm looking into this, seems interesting.

I've been eating the Paleo diet for years (I'm aware that it's not literally the diet that Palaeolithic era humans ate), and people complemented me on my improved skin (I don't have a skin care routine). I also noticed that I simply didn't need to use an anti-dandruff shampoo anymore, because my scalp was no longer extremely dry like it had been since I was a teen.

I'm thinking about going Keto, but I'm curious what the misc thinks and has experienced.

It works, but is almost impossible to stick to for more than 6 weeks. Lack of focus, low energy, vitamin deficiencies etc.

Most people do it wrong. You are supposed to eat 80% fats.... yes you heard correct 80% fats....15% protein and 5% or less plants for carbs. If you eat steaks and chicken, you will fail because you are not getting enough fat. You want to eat oils, butter, etc, not the lean parts of the animals. You can eat a steak etc, but you need to add butter or cream or oil to get to 80% fat.

It works especially well in people of european decent (not african), because we evolved to handle long winters where no plants were available for food, only animals for meat, like mammoths etc. Think of ketosis as a long cold winter food digestion software for our body.

Just make heathier food choices in general, hit your protein requirements, and make sure you're not overeating. It's really that simple. Keto isn't some magic pill that no other diet can replicate, despite what it's zealots will tell you. The reason why people are unhealthy these days isn't because they're eating carbs - it's because they're overeating, sedentary, and not getting enough nutrient dense food in.

I've had better results switching from keto/low carb diets to a high carb/high protein diet. I'm also saving a fk ton of money because meats and healthy fats are expensive, especially nowadays. Performance in the gym has gone up too since I now have the right fuel for anaerobic workouts

Some people don’t like it, some people are indifferent, and some can stick to it lifetime no issues.

Lack of focus, vitamin deficiencies and low energy are usually gone if you do it properly aka take in the said vitamins which will then also take care of the energy issues etc.

The strict Keto diet aka high fat moderate protein is NOT for those who lift weights and do other sports, it’s totally fine to go high protein.

As you pee you lose the minerals on Keto, so you should take in Mag, Zinc, Potassium, Calcium, Vit c, d, and salt. A lot of salt...

First time you try Keto there is strong chance you will go thru something called Keto flu or adaptation to Keto. What that means is that a few days after you cut out direct carb sources you will go flat in your muscles, which looks bad, but your belly will also look flat and lean, which is good, your breath will stink and you might have trouble sleeping, you may have some flu-like body aches and symptoms, thus the name keto flu. This goes on for a day or two. Or for a few days.

To minimize this occurrence and severity of this “Keto Flu” you should take in LOTS of those minerals, drink water, like a LOT more than normally. And you will be fine.

Second time you try to go Keto (after reintroducing carbs and then cutting them out again) you may NOT have ANY of that “Keto flu” as you now have that metabolic flexibility as your body already knows how to run on Ketones and it will be seamless. Assuming you take in those minerals etc.

Ketosis by definition means your body is fueled by ketones, which come ONLY from fat. Too much protein can kick you out of ketosis. When you eat more protein than your body needs, some of its amino acids will be turned into glucose via a process called gluconeogenesis

Ketosis is a side effect. For those with epilepsy and those who just prefer how they feel, it’s cool, they can do strict high fat moderate protein Keto. But for active healthy people Ketosis is irrelevant, it’s all about low carb for those active people who don’t care for or need Ketosis.

It worked great for me. Coupled with intermittent fasting I was able to drop 90 lbs easily in 7 months with little effort. Was easy to stick to.

Dont listen to the poster going on about vitamin deficiencies, its complete nonsense. Gluconeogensis is strictly a demand driven process so again nothing to worry about. You dont need to slather your food in butter and oil either. If your goal is to cut fat, your body doesnt know the difference between your plate or your waist.

Basically eat single ingredient foods. Fatty meats, eggs, green veg/cauliflower and small amount of berries.

You will experience a "keto flu" but youll find your balance. Like the above poster mentioned you need to supplement sodium, potassium and magnesium. I usually salt my water. Look up ketoaide.

It works but what is your goal? Paleo diet (real paleo diet not bacon + processed paleo junk food) is pretty healthy diet that shouldn't lead to any overeating, so you may already be eating quite optimally for your goals depending what they are.

Was on it a couple years and it flat out works in the sense that it helps you stay full for longer. You still have to progressively drop calories to lose weight if that's your goal. Since it's pretty black and white it also makes it easier to stick to and if you can make it a few months on it, it will become second nature.

Works great for obese people who don’t lift

You might have looked and felt better on paleo but that’s nothing to do with being in ketosis. It’s more than likely because you cut out all processed foods.

Went full keto one time and went on a long distance cycle....

Went hypo, never again.

Also **** not having energy in the gym and having to make almost everything yourself from scratch as you can't buy pre-made food.

Effective though but on DASH diet atm, gotta think about the long game brahs

Keto is good when your a summer miscer in his 20's

Not sustainable long term so might as well stick with eating some carbs. Life’s way more enjoyable eating all three macros.

Coming from someone who’s done keto many times.

Does anyone else start breaking out every single time they eat grains? I’ve talked with two dermatologist’s about it and they said diet has nothing to do with it, but any time I’ve eaten oatmeal, brown rice, etc I start breaking out in different spots on my face.

Keto very often results in better skin, and that dermatologist is a f*cking nimrod.
