Lol at how expensive a middle class family lifestyle is

These prices are "all in" prices - including taxes/fees

Brb 700k house in a medium cost of living metro (near decent jobs, near decent schools)
Brb 50k SUV
Brb vacation once a year - 500/night hotel, 350/person airline ticket, 100/day car rental. Up to 4400 for 5 days, 4 people and this doesn't even include any activities
Brb eating out at a basic restaurant is 15/person at a minimum
Brb 1200 dollar iphones for everyone in the family
Brb tens of thousands to furnish home
Brb kids need extracurricular/sports/hobbies, $$$
Brb extra wear and tear on home/furniture/appliances/vehicles means more replacements/repairs


How is anyone supposed to afford this? (srs)


Inb4 OP you don't have to have kids or do that stuff. Yes, but thats not a middle class family lifestyle. Sure I can choose to be single with no kids, not take vacations, hardly eat out, and drive a 1000 dollar 20 year old car, but thats not the lifestyle I'm talking about.

What you listed is not a "middle class lifestyle". That is upper middle class, bordering on upper class.

Most people who live the way you described have an income well into 6 figures or are one missed paycheck away from losing everything.

The base rate was only like 230/night but thats not what you pay. Just a hyatt or mariott, not like it was a ritx carlton. And that room was just for me, imagine a bigger hotel room for a family

You may be surprised to hear this, OP, but middle class is a range.

Most people who have kids are poor.

Most poor people live on government benefits.

That is why the birthing population is going down. People have realized being poor sucks which equates to having kids sucks; therefore, don't have kids.

This is a good decision for the majority of people especially poor people. Having children without the means to take care of them is a bad idea.

As to who can afford these houses - it is often those at the upper end of the middle class range and often those who delayed having children and focused on careers.

Yes. This was the lifestyle I had when I was a kid. One parent worked, and my dad wasn't a high skilled/high paid employee. Things are just more expensive now and wages haven't caught up. Srs

Don’t think my family of 4 has ever paid that much for a hotel. But admittedly I am fairly frugal.

Who says middle class == median class?


In my book middle class refers to an absolute standard of living, regardless of how local income percentiles match up to the cost of living that lifestyle.

Ever hear how the statement "the middle class is shrinking"? If middle class was just based off of the median band of income, that statement would not be possible as the size of the middle class would be constant.

Society changed and technology increased.

You can blame feminism for massive drops in wages or stagnation in wages. Where you to use to have 1 person in a family working you now have 2. That effectively doubled the number of workers in the work force.

The more labor force that is available the less capitalists have to pay as workers are abundant.

If you want the labor force to be paid more economical wages - stop having kids. Feminism ultimately will cure this issue as well as women become educated and focus on careers they will not have kids and thus the labor force will reduce regardless. Most families will opt for 1 child at most and populations will go down.

This list is a perfect example of low financial intelligence. Not OP, but the lifestyle in the OP. A large house, an overpriced car, pointless vacations, latest iPhones yearly. All of those things are liabilities. Not one asset to be found. You can try to argue the home but that includes paying for taxes, repairs, maintenance, upgrades and all of this with post tax income. A family like this is likely 100% dependent on their salary as income.

Yeah this is part of the problem. Inner city jobs aren't paying enough for workers to live in the area. Which means long commutes and quality of life driven down
