Anyone here take college philosopy?
I'm writing a paper that's due tomorrow morning. I'm writing about a given scenario (actually about a theoretical murder) and how hard determinism, soft determinism, and libertarianism theories would apply to it. I think I've grasped soft determinism and libertarianism alright, but I'm just a little stuck on separating libertarianism and soft determinism. I THINK soft determinism basically says we have these set desires and beliefs and having those will ultimately influence our actions, even though we ultimately have the power to do otherwise (say something MORALLY wrong). If I like lifting, I will start lifting, but I won't powerlift because it might injure me... or I like to shoot, but I won't shoot just anything. right? It implies i know what I want to do, but I am able to consciously think logically.

That’s what distinguishes the two. Libertarianism: Free will implies that determinism is false
Soft determinism: Determinism can be true and we have free will.
Soft determinism is pure cope in Misc terms

In other words, in libertarian free will...your choices are metaphysical possibilities. In other forms, they are only epistemological possibilities. In compatibalism, your choices are not metaphysical possibilities and the causal chain is truly unbroken to the beginning of time. Libertarian free will is a cause untethered which may land on whatever effect you decide...your will is the killer of possibilities rather than a linguistic construct.

It's not practical to consider your action caused by the rotation of the sun a billion years ago.doesn't this contradict John Locke? BUT...all that doesn't remove the preferences of the mind from the chain of cause and effect, and it doesn't remove the overall factors which determine whether a person is otherwise bound to a necessary action from the causal chain.
A libertarian free will can do whatever it wants. Everything in the universe appears bound to cause and effect...but the will. It's easy to see how many people consider that problematic. Yet, they don't want to absolve people of moral responsibility...so they turn to analysis of what factors may constrain a person's "choices" to determine if they're actually free.
Someone mentioned that is cope...an yeah, it is. But, irl that is how we actually operate and how our court systems operate.
Interestingly, if we did have libertarian free will...imo, that would make it impossible to explain your actions. The explanation wouldn't be your observations and thoughts and considerations all bound to cause and effect...it would be "free will".
Why did you do that?
-free will
If you said you did something because of x, y, or z...you'd be wrong. The efficient cause would be your magical free will.
Take what I say with a grain of salt, though...it's been about 25 years since I was studying this stuff.

Remember people's opinions, as a rule, reveal more about themself than they do anything else.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

Like a lot of things in philosophy, it isn't a disagreement about any fact about the world. It's a disagreement about what words mean.
When the soft determinist chooses red 36 on the roulette wheel, his hard determinist buddy says you didn't really choose red 36, it wasn't really your choice. The SD says wtf of course I chose it, there were 36 options and I literally just put my money on that one.
The HD says yes but you only did it because you've always thought red was your lucky colour and 36 was your lucky number.
The SD says yes I know, ever since I was a kid.
The HD says but ultimately that is because of genetic and environmental factors and events outside your control that made you the person you are.
The SD says yeah obviously.
The HD says so you were just acting out your part in a chain of events that started before you and is outside your control.
The SD says yeah no ****, that's how everything works.
The HD says so therefore it wasn't really your choice.
The SD says wtf of course it is my choice. Like you said, it is me acting on the various environmental, genetic and life events that made me the person I am. That's what "my choice" MEANS!
The HD says no that's not what it means, for it to be your choice you would have to be responsible for the whole chain of events that led to you doing it.
The SD says wtf the whole chain of events back to the Big Bang, that makes no sense at all, how could I be responsible for that?
The HD says well unless you are then you are just acting out a predetermined destiny, so you don't really make any choices.
The SD says are you mental, nobody thinks that is what making a choice means. Everybody thinks it means that destiny shaped you into a person who wanted to do something and you made a choice and did it.
Etc
When the soft determinist chooses red 36 on the roulette wheel, his hard determinist buddy says you didn't really choose red 36, it wasn't really your choice. The SD says wtf of course I chose it, there were 36 options and I literally just put my money on that one.

Etc
