What is the point of lifting weights after age 40?

Going to the gym costs me around $400 as I can only workout during the day or in morning and I could be doing an appointment. My body is old now at 40 and I am married so not trying to impress. Only reason is to be in peak physical shape in case of civil unrest which is coming

Good point OP, everyone knows the only benefit of rigorous exercise is muscular growth. Your "clients" must be blessed to be in the presence of such a sage.

Im about to be 42, I still lift to stay in shape but after my back surgery I keep going because if I stop my body will go all FUBAR and I end up needing constant pain pills. Life is still fun and I want to enjoy it, my body thinks otherwise and needs to be beaten into submission.

Basically if you dont want your back to hurt like 95% of people over 40 or if you want to do anything active you need to actually stay active.

If you let yourself lose muscle as you age your quality of life goes way down. Especially once you hit your 60s if you don't maintain muscle that's how you rot and die quickly, or rot physically slow while your mind is still ahead of your body, a prisoner in a shell. I've seen it so many times in assisted livings and nursing homes. People who could have lived at home and have a good retirement if they stayed active instead rot and lose all their assets, on Medicaid, a ward of the state whose children rarely visit because the environment is depressing AF.
Yeah Buddyyy! Light weight! Light weight baby!!!!

I’ve got 2 neighbors, one is 89ish, the other in his 90s. Both work out on the regular, and have the whole time I’ve known them. I wish I had half the energy as these two dudes.

By working out do you mean smashing each other?

I suppose that would keep them in shape.

Because you can. If you need more reason than that, I guess just lay down and rot.

Also, I don't actually lift weights much anymore, I do calisthenics....more on the gymnastics side. It involves a lot of scapula, tendon, ligament, joint strength. Stuff that will break you as you age. I strengthen that ****, they will not break. I move around better now than I did in my teens....cause I actually work on how I move myself now. Lotta mobility/flexibility stuff now, things I thought I can never do when I was younger, I do now at my age, 54.
