Anyone raise chickens?

Wild chicken keeps laying eggs on my property

How do you know if they are actually gonna hatch?

The mom just drops an egg and runs off, comes back later and drogs another egg.

Are they edible?

Since you can't be positive when they were laid you can simply do a float test.

Here are the specifics:
If your eggs sink to the bottom and lie flat on their sides, they are very fresh. If your eggs stand on one end at the bottom, they are a few weeks old, but still fine to eat. If your eggs float to the surface, they are no longer fresh. Don't eat them!

I also recommend you build a comfy nest in that box or somewhere private and mark an x on a couple of those eggs so you tell them apart and place them in the nest. The hen will probably start laying there and you can collect the fresh eggs and eat them. A fresh egg will keep for at least 3 months in your refrigerator.

I tried building nests for mine with hay, comfy bedding, old shirts. I tried boxes, planters, random corners and out of the way areas I’d see them hang around. They wouldn’t even consider anything I tried. They choose a table in the shed. -_-

You can eat the egg. Even if it's fertilized, the chances of it looking anything other than a normal egg is so small especially when the hen runs off right away.

Dunno where you are OP but could get salmonella if its an infected chicken.

Eggs are good for 20 or so days as long as you don't wash or refridgerate them.
Just put them in a basket, bowl, whatever until you're ready for them.
Post above is correct about refrigerating fresh eggs.
