Is retro gaming the future ?

Lately I've been unable to get myself to play anything for more than half an hour.

I think it's because every game is simply a progression trap, trying to get you hooked on some repetitious daily/weekly grind where you have a checklist of chores to complete, and if you don't keep up you fall behind.

I miss the days of playing a game for gameplay, no online tricks and traps to get you dopamine hooked on a game which is no longer fun.

What retro games you guys been playing ?

I might get the MegaMan remake collection, no bs just solid gameplay.

Majority of games these days, even your beloved pony titles have shoehorned RPG elements in them that don't belong.

Why does every single fking game need gear with various stats, skill trees, levelling up etc

Look at the top games on steam, Xbox etc… they are all GaaS games with endless grinds, or open world games with icon filled maps and shoehorned RPG elements

I'd say so. Been getting more into retro PC gaming and Xbox 360/PS3 and PS2/Gamecube eras these days. Still play a lot of current stuff, but older games are where I find the most variety, most new stuff falls into the same few categories for me.

I think another avenue could be indies but you have to tread carefully, there are some great indies that focus on gameplay though like hollow knight, slay the spire and even bloodstained ritual of the night.

I've been playing CoD4 and MW2 online a lot. Is that retro

Thinking about getting an NES or SNES with the modded drive w pre-loaded games so you don't need cartridges

I think the definition of retro is ever moving, some would consider the 360 to be retro.

We do need a new definition though, in another 20 years PS5 walking simulators will be considered retro

Oh look, another jaded gamer whose experience is so expansive his catalogue of "every game" includes breathtaking titles such as Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Clash of Clans mobile.

I can name a bunch but it doesnt matter because you will always find some loophole or complaint. Your the one avoiding the question of what games you want to see. Name one and i can answer it. Unlike you i play tons of games. ive always got at least 5 games on rotation

Done with the Series X!! It is POINTLESS ! Zero reason to own this cucked console

PC/steam deck combo all the way.

What exclusives does Xbox even have anymore ? Halo 5 ? 360 games not available on steam ? That is IT!

Please note I'm still a huge fan of the Xbox ecosystem and GamePass, just not the console.

I find it harder and harder to get into a lot of modern day games. Between countless cluttered screens, things to click on, DLC, modern day games seem and feel like a chore to play. I just started cyberpunk and I know I’ll eventually get into it, but the game bombards all of your senses and it’s pretty overwhelming. If I want to be bombarded and overwhelmed I can just stick with real life.

I’m also playing paper Mario TTYD on my steam deck and it’s a game that came out 20 years ago and an absolute blast to play.

The way you feel seems to be the way most people feel, you'll just find the biggest fanboys trying to pretend like everything is great these days.

I don't think anyone here thinks everything is great, but we're just waiting for examples of these games you guys are playing that are so bad that you can't even make it an hour into them. And if that's the case, why aren't you looking at gameplay videos? Just because you like 2002 games doesn't mean you need to pretend that you can't see what a game looks like.

I think I am slowly turning into a retro gamer or handheld gamer. Would wrather pick up the switch or gameboy. Been craving to play n64 and old school games. A lot to do with time and nostalgia. Been playing some new games but really just miss the simplicity of old school. Not to mention can pick up and put down a lot easier.

Yup back in the day games were just made by passionate gamers who simply wanted to come up with fun ideas. Now a days games are created by corporate executives referencing graphs and trends who are trying to maximize things like number of players online and monetization schemes.

What games are hard to pick up and put down nowadays compared to older games? Especially with all of the advances in quick save and cloud save mechanics?

What I mean buy pick up and put down as in learning curves, the stories.

For instance and this may sound corny but My wife wanted me to get Animal Crossing to play with her. Cool Can pick up do a few task and put it down. Last game I really got sucked into was RDR2. I just don't have time right now to devote really to gaming. I like stuff I can pick up do a few things and put down. Been really playing the Advance Wars reboot for switch.

Nothing corny about that, i played it for a bit with my wife too.

Sounds like you need more games like Palworld, Sea of Thieves, Stardew Valley, Fire Emblem, Unicorn Overlord, and more strategy/farming games. Platformers would probably serve you well too.

I have been really wanting to play Fire Emblem as I remember playing that back in the day I've also seen Stardew valley and that seems really interesting.. Thinking about selling my xbox one and getting some retro systems and some new switch games.

To put it in more perspective I have a 1 year old and 4 year old. When the tv is on which we try to keep on little it's on there shows. If I game on the xbox at all I use my laptop for remote play which makes it more pita because firing up the laptop and all.
