Have you ever had moments of true courage in life?

Where you knew you were probably going to die, but had to do something anyway?

Saved a cousin of mine from falling off a cliff in some hiking area in the Poconos once like 20 years ago. Grabbed her hand and almost fell off myself. She grew up to be a total bitch that stole, lied, and NC’d our family 10 years later. Got married in Vegas and husband mysteriously died in an unusual motorcycle crash.

Kind of reconsider that good deed sometimes.

I swam into a riptide because one of daughters was in it. She was young. We went out far but I knew how to get out and kept her calm.

Eventually I got us out and we returned to shore. It took a while. We treated it as no big deal and went out for pizza as not to alarm the kids and make them afraid of the water.

Now, she's a competitive swimmer.

Yes, I got up off the couch and left my house, unlike OP who is a worthless sack of sheet who is incapable of doing that.

GJDM. In case you didn't already know, if you get caught in a rip swim out at a 90 degree angle to the motion of the rip i.e directly sideways. I got caught in one and tried to fight back against it, just ran out of energy.

As for me, my moment of courage was when I saw my dog chilling in the backyard and this redback spider landed on him. Without hesitation I ran out there and bitchslapped the spider off of him so hard it killed the spider instantly.

Later I found out that spider venom isn't all that dangerous to dogs and I was really the one at risk.
Back off, Warchild.

Seriously.

Swam out to a sandbar with my son.

On the way back we hit a riptide. He tried to fight it and got exhausted and I told him to put his hands on my shoulders and I'd swim him back. He was panicking a little so instead of hanging on and letting me pull him, he was putting his weight on my shoulders which pushed me under. I popped up and told him to just relax and hang on like he used to when he was a little kid. Approx 3/4 way to shore I was totally exhausted, panicking in my head, fully mentally prepared to drown, and my sole purpose was getting him as close to the shore as possible before that happened.

I felt the bottom just when I thought I was going to go under. Never have felt relief like that. He hopped off. Pretty certain he has absolutely no idea the danger he was in.

Like I said to GOO, if this happens again, make sure to swim directly perpendicularly to motion of the tide, i.e exactly sideways. You'll get out of it soon enough, never, ever, try to swim directly against it. You could wear out and possibly drown.

This is must know, could-save-your-life-one-day advice.

It's not about the outcome for things like that. It's more what you knew in the moment.

He's exactly right. Riptides form as little channels through the sand under the water. As water recedes it funnels into the channel. Making a current you aren't going to be able to swim against.

You can get out by swimming sideways to the beach. Once you're out, you can return to shore.

But it's not easy to do this with another person who may not be able to swim (well). You also might run into a second riptide and have to do it again. It's a very dangerous situation.

Every year they get people a whole lot more than sharks ever do…

If you're ever in one, you need to stay calm. It won't pull you under…it will pull you away from shore. Don't fight it directly because it won't work. Swim sideways to the beach and when you're out return to shore. You have to conserve your energy or you might not make it.

Family did this to me as well and I stood my ground. Turned out to be the correct move as well. Most vaxcells have never owned up to being wrong tho. Didn't govs accuse us of being murderers as well lmao?! Anyways, lesson learned in always going off your instinct.
