Millennials Are Ready For a Four-Day Week

Recent polling conducted exclusively for Newsweek by Redfield and Wilton Strategies found that millennials are most in favor of reducing their weekly work hours. Surveying 4,000 eligible U.S. voters between April 6 and 7, the poll found that 63 percent support transitioning to a four-day working week, with 46 percent believing it makes workers more productive.

Millennials outpaced all other age groups, with nearly three-quarters (74 percent) of those surveyed wanting reduced working hours. Of those, nearly half (44 percent) said they were strongly in favor of a shorter working week, and a further 30 percent indicated general support for the idea. Only eight percent of millennials opposed the idea.

Their opinions are a far cry from the oldest generations aged 59 and over, including Baby Boomers and the silent generation. In all, 50 percent of those born in 1964 and before support a four-day week, with almost a third saying they neither support nor oppose the idea, whereas less than a quarter (23 percent) of millennials indicated the same.

The Experience

Numerous companies reached out to Newsweek regarding their experiences and opinions on making a four-day week work. The majority touted a considerable benefit to work-life balance being the best result of making the switch, with almost all reporting lower employee burnout and higher employee retention.

Lmao that's pathetic. They don't even want 4 10 hours days. But rather less hours…. Probably want the same pay too. I'm a millennial but also came to the conclusion that millennials are retarded long ago.

Because 4 day work weeks make the most sense. Happier employees mean more productive workers, less turnover, higher morale, increase profits. It’s a fkin no brainer.

Besides, we need 3 day weekends.

1 day for leisure
1 day for errands people are unable to run during the week
1 day for rest

Trying to cram all of that chit between Saturday and Sunday is impossible. 3 days off is the most logical approach.

Of course they want a 4 day work week. They'd vote for a 0 day work week if they could.

The same people that complain they can't afford to buy houses and are getting fukked by student loans and inflation are wanting to work less hours. Let me guess. They want to work less hours/days but keep their pay the same/increase their pay.

I actually support the 4 day work week. Lets do it. So the dudes that are willing to hustle 5-6 days per week just make a ****load more money and the wealth gap grows even greater between the plebs.

You say it's pathetic, but if the technology is there…Why not? We've gotten more and more efficient as the decades have gone by. AI might be something serious.

What's a legitimate reason to be in the office 5 days?

An English local council recently concluded that a 4 day week was racist.

Frontline roles, that couldn't change to a 4 day week, had lots of minorities, whereas non-frontline roles, which were mainly white, could change to a 4 day week.

Therefore, a 4 day week unfairly advantaged white people and was hence racist.

really no reason not to.

no one, absolutely no one, is actually doing 40 hours of work per week lol.

I think most research on the topic shows people do like ~3 hours of work daily.

even if you ignore all facts/stats/etc, working 5 days and having 2 off doesn't make logical sense.

4/3 is a more even split.

productivity is through the roof since the 70's, while wages remain stagnant and working hours long.

it will likely never pass, as a 4 day work week with the same pay equals a 20% raise for everyone, but i'm glad to see it entering the public discourse.

Frontline roles like what? McDonald’s? Or do they mean nurses and EMTs?

Simple solution: hire more people.

Doesn’t the government want low unemployment?

Tons of Asian and Black British working in healthcare.

But the whole premise of racism is retarded, as usual.

There are a lot of white that work in markets and IBD transactions and markets won't close on Thursdays.

Or they just do 4x10 days. I've asked employers during interviews could I do that and it was all No.

Employers don't owe me anything, I understand that, but they're stuck in their ways.

I always hear this word lazy thrown out. What does lazy mean exactly? If production and profits are up, how does that reflect laziness?
