Evicted a couple of squatters this morning.

Epilogue: After I trapped the third one, I was concerned that they were too small to be on their own so I contacted a wildlife rehabilitator. She told me to put it in a box outside the house and insisted mama would come get it. I wasn't crazy about the possibility of mama just moving it back inside the house, but went ahead and put it in a box on the side of the house outside of the fence so the dog couldn't get it.

Well, mama did not go get it and at some point it made it out of the box and into the back yard and the dog killed it that evening. The next day I got a call to go out to a rig off Mexico, so took the trap down even though we were still hearing attic noises since I couldn't check it while I was gone. Some time during the week and a half I was gone the noises stopped. Don't know if I got all the kids and mama decided to leave, or what, but at least they're gone. Hope the first 2 made it, although I have my doubts.

Now I have to clean up the mess they left in the attic.

There's a wooded creek down the road from our house. They look young, so I hope they're OK on their own.

Little bastards got into the flexible ducts so I'm currently air conditioning the attic. Not looking forward to spending tomorrow up in the attic.

I think the mother is long gone. I don't know if they got in there by themselves, or if the mother left them there, but I've only seen the two of them. We'll see if the attic sounds stop. They're not babies, but obviously not full grown either.

Don't be silly, clubbing really isn't practical when they're in that style of trap.

Spoiler!

Attic noises continued, so the trap went back up and I got this guy. This morning I contacted a wildlife rehabilitator who insisted that mama was still around and I should just put it in a cardboard box outside the house and she would come get it. As soon as I put him in the box he jumped right out. Not sure how this will end. Hopefully I won't have to trap him again.

Awwww I hope mama finds them!

A long time ago I saw a squirrel in the road going in circles. It must have gotten hit and caused some kind of brain damage. I called a wildlife rehab person and we took it there. She had to put it to sleep but said that it had milk so prob babies somewhere. I walked around a ton in that area trying to see if I could hear the babies screeching but never did. I felt so sad. I just hope they were old enough to live on their own.

I went back out an hour later and he was gone. Hopefully mama got him and hopefully she didn't take him back to the attic. I'm still hearing noises up there so the trap just went back up.

Drowning is a lot of work

Because they can open chicken coop latches and rip the heads off every chicken?

Because they tear the barn cats intestines out of their stomache?

We never had raccoons in my area growing up. Moved back years later and they're all over.

My dad's used the car exhaust trick with skunks. With them you just do whatever it takes to not get sprayed. I don't keep chickens, but have neighbors that do and relocating an animal in my location is likely to create a problem for someone else. The biggest issue for me is them tearing up my garden or making a mess in outbuildings. I do need to remove animals from time to time, but I try to make it as quick as possible, which usually means a 22 to the head.

The place I relocated them to is a nature preserve, so farm animal or garden problems are pretty unlikely. That said, after doing some research, it looks like the two I relocated were likely a little too young to be on their own. If this devolves into me trapping the little ones, leaving them outside, and mama moving them back in again, I'll likely resort to .22 head shots rather than relocating them out to likely starve.
