How do you boys handle family members who completely lack respect for you?

I've always struggled with this, fellas. I understand that you can't force respect. But even after directly confronting the issue, at best I'll get the facade of "respect" with passive undertones of disrespect. Like backhanded compliments or quick little jabs tossed into the discussion... that sort of thing. To my face I'll get that. Behind my back, I'm getting completely trashed though. As usual. Treated like a stooge. I've never been exactly sure what to do about it, boys. How are you supposed to handle this sort of thing?

I don't think this really relates to the thread but my dad retired a few years ago and just became a straight up old man. He just sits in his garage now listen to the radio without a shirt on. He used to look really good for his age but he literally aged probably 10-15 years in the last 3. It's brutal. He walks with a limp now and got a big chunk of his face removed from skin cancer.

I've found that when anybody feels entitled to disrespect you, it means that you're too close to them. You need to put some distance between the relationship and come back at some point in the future.

Yeah pretty much this. Just stop doing anything for them and put some distance between yourselves. It's a situation where they're not giving you your space and the respect you deserve. These sort of problems usually stem from people thinking they know what you should be doing, not wanting to let you be your own person.

How old is he? My dad suddenly became an old man when he hit his 70's. Like in his 60's he was a lot more fun to be around but getting old manish, but by his 70's it's like he straight up became some grumpy old man stereotype. Still love the guy, but he can be annoying if I'm around him too often.

He's 67 now. He retired at 62-63 I don't remember but yeah he became exactly the old man stereotype. So weird.

Yeah late 60's sounds about right. It's crazy how quickly dads can straight up become old man stereotypes when they get 60's+, especially if they're retired. I think there's a lot of truth to how having a job or purpose can really keep men younger, sharper, and healthier. When they become 60+ retirees it's just too easy for them to get into some stereotypical old man mentality and lifestyle.
