How do you boys handle family members who completely lack respect for you?
I've always struggled with this, fellas. I understand that you can't force respect. But even after directly confronting the issue, at best I'll get the facade of "respect" with passive undertones of disrespect. Like backhanded compliments or quick little jabs tossed into the discussion… that sort of thing. To my face I'll get that. Behind my back, I'm getting completely trashed though. As usual. Treated like a stooge. I've never been exactly sure what to do about it, boys. How are you supposed to handle this sort of thing?

I don't think this really relates to the thread but my dad retired a few years ago and just became a straight up old man. He just sits in his garage now listen to the radio without a shirt on. He used to look really good for his age but he literally aged probably 10-15 years in the last 3. It's brutal. He walks with a limp now and got a big chunk of his face removed from skin cancer.

I've found that when anybody feels entitled to disrespect you, it means that you're too close to them. You need to put some distance between the relationship and come back at some point in the future.

I verbally rip them apart. Then if they want to apologize for getting out of pocket, thatβs fine. If not, go NC.

When they become 60+ retirees it's just too easy for them to get into some stereotypical old man mentality and lifestyle.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.
