If you had some land how would you build a cheap house?

Trailer, container home, rv, barndominium? What is the best cheap home?

Insulated concrete formwork. You assemble it yourself, just like lego, and then pour concrete in to it.

You pay a premium for those. The ticket is to build whatever you can mostly by yourself or with free/cheap labor

You're thinking of a burrow owl. Everybody knows the burrow owl lives in a hole in the ground. If you look at the soil around any large US city, there's a big undeground homosexual population. Des Moines, Iowa, for an example. Look at the soil around Des Moines. You can't build on it; you can't grow anything in it. The government says it's due to poor farming. But I know what's really going on. I know it's the queers. They're in it with the aliens. They're building landing strips for gay Martians.

You have two main costs, materials and labour. Anything you can do yourself, do yourself, otherwise hire people.

ICF saves you money, because materials are cheap and labour is free, but you want electrical, plumbing etc done right (or they cost you more in the long run), so if you don't know how to do them, you have to spend the money.

Slab and stick built, easy and cheap.

Iv built before, never again… its a never ending nightmare. You always end up spending way more than you budgeted

Just buy something cheap and settle on it.

I'm not sure you are butt there are kit homes, like IKEA everything is flat pack and you build it yourself.

If you're a mountain man you can build a home just like our forefathers did, by using the materials around you. If you're in a forested area building a house from timber, if you have lots of rocks in your area building the house from stone. If you have clay soil, rammed earth etc..

That's because you live in Australia where the building industry is full of people wanting to make a quick buck.

Easy. I'd buy the land cash. The land I would buy would be in a state with low property taxes and not too far from the amish or mennonites.

Then I would use the local amish to build me a sturdy house. Then get someone else to do the electrical and plumbing.

I've been meaning to design a modular small guest house of sorts that can be built quickly and easily. I may make a thread for design ideas.

My issue was my build didn't come with landscaping, fencing, pathways etc. (I don't think many do), so for me, it was doing it myself as i didn't want to pay millions (this is where your comment is right, tradies here are fked and charge a lot). I got someone in for fencing (and split cost with neighbour), but i did all the landscaping, excavating of excess hilly dirt left over, clothes line, pathways/concreting myself. Just back breaking BS i didn't want to do… next time, buying an established dwelling 110%

Insurance companies don't like ICF.
