Are seed oils really that bad?

I don’t think they’re healthy.

The amount everyone eats makes me doubt they’re one of the big problems.

I think it is more the amount of processed carbs people eat.

Your post made me investigate, and it only says the FDA is against "brominated vegetable oil."

However according to a Harvard Public Health source I saw, there is no scientific evidence that seed oils are bad.





Perhaps the No Seed Oils thing is a Twitter trend led by ErnieMcCracken.

It depends on what seed oils we talking. Legit high quality sunflower seed oil is actually pretty good. as long as its not safflower or rapeseeds or cottonseed.

Good sunflower oil is one of the best and I imagine it will gain popularity if the others get ousted. Giant sunflower can be grown and the oil only needs to be pressed and squeezed like olive oil to be collected.

its the chemically harvested industrial food oils that are the problem.

try this stuff for good clean flavor cooking high heat cooking where you don't use butter or olive oils….great stuff, also get a good toasted seasame oil for asian cooking.

Yes. It doesn't even make biological sense to ingest them.

Something that blows my mind is how much of these things we eat despite not what we biologically need or would eat in nature.

Even things like EVOO no matter how organic or cold pressed it is, will go rancid. Even in those green bottles. I used to take a spoonful of that stuff at night sometimes testing the perceived benefits of it and it tasted so bad. All of the different ones I tried, and I tried the best ones.

Only use animal fats. Lard, beef tallow, ghee, butter and other fats of animals. That's it. I can't believe I used to cook with EVOO/olive oil too. Brutal for the health. Canola oil is machine oil and I used to fry my corn tortillas in that stuff.

I think fresh legitimate olive oil, right off of a farm in the mediterranean would be good. olive oil also tastes good to me

the problem is most of them are adulterated with cheaper oils. it does eventually go rancid, but it also has antioxidants that prevent it from doing so quickly.

it's best not to overdo it, since it does have polyunsaturated fats, and those tend to cause a lot of problems and also oxidize easily, especially if heated

lard also contains lots of polyunsaturated fats, but i think it still beats a lot of seed oils out there.

Yea that's the point. If it is fresh, cold pressed and ingested from the farm, that is best case scenario. But bottling it and importing it through temperature, moisture and light fluctuations over long periods of time completely ruin it. And yea I remember when I stopped using olive oil because most are cut with vegetable or some other oil. Same with avocado oil.

The most utilized forms of fat for thousands of years was animal fats. So our bodies can obvious thrive off of it, and it used to be our main energy source (well fat at least).

Dr. Cate? Sounds familiar. I have been doing the carnivore diet the past 8 months and ingesting a lot of alternative health view points, and I swear I saw her in an interview with one of the doctors. Does she talk about oils in depth?

i still would prefer to use tallow and coconut oil for cooking though. sesame sometimes a little bit for flavor in certain dishes. btw the SCP tallow you recommended is good. smells weird when raw but after cooking it smells like the fat from a steak

Yea I looked her up on youtube quick and I remember seeing her interview with Dr. Ken Berry.

This looks like a good list and what I've hear over the years. I only cook with tallow, ghee, butter or lard now. I do sometimes use coconut oil for some things. Animal products are the best for high heat cooking too (and are still healthy)

Those other green labeled oils I believe are fine in very small amounts here and there. Even olive oil. But after seeing things first hand and understanding the importing process, I do not trust the quality of any of these oils even if they are high quality. Fresh is best. I'd ingest olive oil if I had my own tree lol

I cook with it. It's a little greasier than tallow or ghee, but the taste is amazing. Give it go.

They’re probably the worst oils to cook with but I think the harms are overblown by some. That said, where the fuk are you bros even eating seed oils? I can’t think of a single thing in my regular diet that’s made with seed oils.

You bros eating takeout at every meal or what? If so, then you probably have a lot of other chit to worry about too.

Animal Fats are the best health wise

But there’s plenty of controlled olive oils that are great. Skip the Italian chit and get Greek or Lebanese in a metal container not a glass or plastic bottle. It costs to much to guarantee a good Italian evoo and they love exporting garbage.

Peanut, sesame, sunflower etc oils are fine (I know peanuts aren’t a seed, bite me) but again you need to have good sources and stick to stuff in metal containers.

Most of the >this is really bad for you< comes from people with imbalanced fat ratios where they have a horrible ratio of omega 6 to 3 and nixing out seed oils helps with that.

Also for cooking lard really is superior from a smoking point standard because in all seriousness the carcinogens produced by taking oil past its smoking point is most likely way more detrimental than that single meal will be to your fat “balance”


Honestly the only thing you should really be scared of is chit like the hydrogenated fryer oil most places use.

Would recommend finding places using peanut oil for frying.

I use sesame oil fairly frequently in dressings and for things like dipping Korean bbq meat into before sprinkling a bit of salt on it (this is the proper way to cook the thin brisket and the only time I won’t salt meat before cooking)

I think the one thing to add, to answer what Strawng said above, is that seed oils are in everything. Every single processed food item has it. Any type of bars, sweets, even BUTTER. Almost every restaurant uses the cheapest oil they can get so all your food has seed oils. It is one of the major poisons of our society for health.

I think if anyone were to go to the grocery store and look at the back of any food item, it has seed oils in it. They're in everything and it's kind of amazing.

Yes which is why I typically don’t sweat adding bits because I cook over 90% of the food I eat myself so I know what exactly is in my body. Most people don’t have that opportunity or desire.

They are in literally all processed foods. So unless your eating single ingredient items, check the labels because they almost always contain some

Black seed oil is pretty good for health. Not meant for cooking though; it's better to drizzle over salad or take it straight.

Ive been cooking in olive oil daily for almost 20 years and I havent had any issues.

Test levels through the roof

Look good

Feel good

Olive Oil, Coconut Oil and Avocado Oil are not seed oils. They are all fruit. And their oils are made from the fruit directly.

I heard bad things on coconut oil as well though

I just go olive oil for salads and bread dipping, avocado oil for cooking cause of the higher smoke point
