I might have been suspicious if I hadn't been with him the day before he died. After all, he definitely was investigating and writing about a lot of sensitive subjects. But based on being with him and talking to people who were worried about him in the weeks leading up to his death, and being around him when he had had similar problems when he was younger, I was pretty much convinced that he wasn't in danger from any outside agency.

He had the impression the date had been moved but it was the courts mistake but the judge was a dik. And nah, the ATF didn't really try to negotiate in either. Yes, the court date might have been botched-but that was the reason they were there, the guy refused to appear in court & the Feds came under fire when they went to get him. He had no intention of turning up at court, as he had made clear multiple times previously-if he had then as the aftermath showed he would have either walked, or just served a short sentence. He said himself later that he regretted his decision.
