Should I hire a live-in Russian nanny/au pair for the boys

Basically, if either me or the wife or both go back to work at some point we’ll lose the free childcare which for 2 kids is around $100,000

Instead of paying $100,000 per year for 2 kids I could hire an early 20’s Russian girl to look after the kids

If we provide accomodation and food then the actual cash salary would be around $50,000

Some of them apparently do light housekeeping but we have cleaners and meal delivery service so whatever

Pros:
-mum would have another person to talk to when she’s here
-live in help/babysitter
-we have a massive house anyway so losing 1 brm/1 bath is nbd
-kids can get more consistent exposure to Russian language
-don’t have to walk kids to daycare or worry about them picking up random viruses

Cons:
?

If neither parent is working, why not raise the kids yourself instead of hiring someone else?

Read the OP

The above scenario is based on us going back to work and hence losing free daycare

A babushka isn’t going to be able to chase down and manage 2 (or 3) overly energetic boys

We get free (or, more precisely, 90% or more subsidised) provided you don’t have any individual reportable income

So on a $100,000 childcare bill I might pay $10k or less which is basically free

I personally wouldn't do it, as I don't want live in staff; the idea makes me uncomfortable (it took me a while to get used to a cleaner doing mommy shifts). I don't see any problem with people doing it, but it wouldn't work for me.

We chose to each WFH 2-3 days a week. Rather than have fixed days, we look at who needs to be where and arrange our diaries so that one of us is at home.

You only get half of your work done and then have to do the other half when the other one comes home, of after the munchkin has gone to bed, but it works for us.
Screw nature; my body will do what I DAMN WELL tell it to do!

Why not

We would interview to find someone that is a good fit and the boys get along with

Some families take the nanny on holiday with them

Just a personal quirk. We have a cleaner on mommy shifts, a part time gardener and have meetings at the house, but somebody living and sleeping there is a no.

Nah. Extra helping hand is massive and hired help can actually play a huge role in the positive dev of the kids. The only issue I see is that I wouldn't want the nanny living to close. I'd try to find her a place to stay a few miles away so that travel is easy for her.

But then eventually you need to hire another nanny for the new kids made with the current nanny

And when you inevitably knock up that nanny, you need to hire another nanny and on and on it goes. Pretty soon you’re 13 kids and 5 nannies deep

How are both of you not working? Parents taking care of you all? Anyways i was going to ask why a Russian and not a Latina.. but i saw Russian is the only non-asian option you guys basically have in Aussie land. And your Abo wife probably wouldn't want a prime young latina in her 20s walking around the house.

$50k for a nanny? Just hire a miscer for half that. You won't be able to impregnate them, but they may still want you to bang them since there are a lot of closeted dudes on here. Win-win.

We considered it a couple of years ago. Life would've been less hectic and the price was very reasonable, but we never got past the talking stage. We should have.

Might depend on how you do it, but I wouldn't in your shoes. The time is going to fly by and before you know it, they will be moving away and you're going to wonder where all the time went. After you're dead and gone, your kids and grandkids will be your longest lasting legacy, and the last ones who remember you. There is simply no replacement for time with them with regard to how much you can influence and teach them. If I were you, I'd be figuring out how to spend as much time as possible with them.

Is this serious? Yes we had help when the boys were younger, but my wife still stayed home and raised the kids. The help was just that….help. She went on some holidays with us too……but why would I let someone else raise my kids if I had the means? It just doesn’t compute with me what so ever…..
