Cultural differences pertaining to work and money that I noticed

I'm from the deep south, just simple common folks. They value things like being hardworking, being humble/not flashy, saving a buck where you can etc. My first culture shock came from hanging around in Miami. The ostentatious jewelry and outward displays of wealth was the first sign things are little different here.

Then I had a conversation with a guy, I said him something like "working hard these days brother?" Something normal I would say to anyone in the deep south. He looked at me almost like I cursed him "hell naw man." I realized the thought of "working hard" is looked down upon in these cultures, whereas people almost brag about how hard they work where im from.

One time, I was offering someone a glass of wine my mother bought me. I said "I doubt this is top shelf stuff, but I like it." They were shocked, they thought I was making fun of my mother and calling her cheap. Where I'm from, saving money is actually a good thing. Buying the cheap wine would be a compliment

I grew up sort of like you. Dad was born and raised in WV and KY so he raised me with more of that southern baptist mindset. Mom is Swedish and they're just humble and hardworking mentality.

But I also have family that are rich, like very rich, and it really is a complete different mindset. The sort of "If it's not the best or high quality, why buy it?" Xmas parties with top shelf wine, they gift each other the most expensive japanese whiskeys, etc. They look at me like an imbecile for driving a paid off old used car still. I'm sitting listening to them talk about which type of sports car they are going to buy for their weekend car and I have nothing to add. Money to them is just a means to an end and has way less value. Saving? That's cooked in already and the rest is just what can they get with it.

To them the idea of working hard isn't necessarily pumping in 80 hour weeks, but moreseo being available to make decisions at all times of the day. Or something like "Ahh yea have to go florida again to make this deal go through. Another few days of wining and dining!"

It really is just a different world.

Iranian guy here. Yeah p/ much if u ain't running it down and nearly killing yourself in a study or career you're a failure and a disgrace to your parents. Your parents basically own you and dictate what you do, how u do it and to what standard till you phucc off out of the house or get married. By that time you better made something of yourself else you're always gonna feel inferior towards other Iranians who usually got some prestige or notable achievements and wealth.

Tough life

Hard work is good, smart work is better. I'm right in the middle, I like having money, and I'm no penny pincher, but I'm also not flashy, and like a good deal.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Feels. The cultural differences extend beyond regions too. The part of Upstate New York I’m from is fairly blue collar, but there are wealthy suburbs with a strong corporate legacy full of trust fund kids and so forth. Just going across town you’d hear attitudes similar to those in Miami (to a lesser degree) but my neighborhood was more like yours. People worked hard, bragged about 60+ hour weeks, penny pinched, etc. My dad used to buy my clothes from Goodwill or the Salvation Army. We scrapped and returned bottles for 5¢ back. Growing up, going to the “fancy” Walmart on the rich side of town was considered a luxury lol. Honestly I relate more to the working class values despite now being in the white collar corporate world. These people are so fkin fake man. I used to crave wealth because I never had it as a kid, but the older I get, the more I feel like money is bullchit. Once your essentials are covered and you’re comfortable, the material things mean very little.

I grew up pretty poor, and for the life of me I could not understand why we had to be poor. My parents were all about hard work, and my mother being a very devout Catholic would say that she doesn't want to be rich, as she would be rich in heaven or something. As an adult, looking back, I get it even less than I did back then. Being poor in the US is a choice if one isn't disabled.

When i was in Miami most people were visiting like myself and there were a ton of Europeans and Russians buying condos.
They obviously brought there culture with them.
Flashy cars, flashy clothes, and the look of wealth.
There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and…It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

I think Dave Chappelle /threaded this.

1. Dave joked about how men are cool with living in a cardboard box and the only reason for being flashy is because sloots like flashy things.

2. Bonus thing to mention is the line "gotcha bitch!" nails it. It's a fools errand trying to keep a woman happy long term, the trick is keeping her happy long enough to get what you want whether that be sex or making babies.

I don't think people should be having babies if they're not on the same page and 100% upfront about everything. Society is the way it is because people aren't being responsible with having and raising their kids.

I'm from Sydney and even I know that Miami is filled with douchebags.

BTW I'm from Sydney and to me all you southern people sound the same, black and white. Ebonics to me just sounds like black red-necks. Is this true?

It's the pretty much the same thing, but evolved because of black migration from the south. Most blacks lived on plantations in the south before the civil war. Afterwards, huge waves of black people migrated north to Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee etc. So, you've got this mixing of cultures where black people are basically bringing southern culture north and also becoming urbanized at the same time.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_...ican_American)

But of course, not everyone left. Most blacks still live in the south and are just southerners. I once had someone ask what Soul Food was. It's basically just southern food made by black people

I mean it's Miami. What do you expect? You country bumpkins get robbed all the time. You come down to Miami and fake it but those sloots know who has and doesn't have actual money.. So you guys get taken for a ride because all the sudden you got a lot of very attractive women giving you attention and you go back to a hotel with them and end up with a gun in your face and you getting robbed. It's going to NYC and saying everyone is always trying to show off or one up one another. In my line of business it helps me because when we remodel someone's kitchen in, someone else in the building now wants a new kitchen as well.

Deep south values are similar to Midwest values. People brag about saving money on things, and hard work and family comes before all. I've also spend time in Miami and some other places with different values, and you can tell the people are all lowkey miserable.
