Its about making the right product at the right time. Xerox basically gave apple the keys to the graphical user interface (mac os), but they only would allow it to be used on their own computers. Gates basically ripped it off and made it available for all PCs. PCs ended up being the primary computer system (apple almost went out of business before coming back with ipod/iphone/etc). So gates had the product that literally everyone had to have if you wanted a pc that wasn't a mac.

Tons of other people are in the same boat.

Look at Mark Cuban, he put radio on the internet and got bought out by yahoo for billions and the company he started ended up being closed a short while later. You don't have to be smart to make money like that. You just have to be in the right place at the right time. Not saying these people aren't smart. They are. But you don't have to be. Big difference between being a "hedge fund manager" and starting a company that makes billions and billions of dollar and is one of the most valuable companies in the world. To be a hedge fund manager you just need some rich guys to give you money for you to invest. Even an idiot with no training can do it if you can get people to give you money if you can study for a few tests. I have the proper licenses and if you give me the money I could be a hedge fund manager in six months. You don't even need many employees to run a hedge fund. You can outsource a lot of it.

Not the same for starting a tech company with thousands of employees and 30+ years of history. Multiple CEOs. Tons of lawsuits. Tons of disputes. Tons of competitors. ETc etc. Sh*t couldn't be covered up if there was some conspiracy theory.
