Lol. Halloween last year someone found a zombie door sticker that was full sized, and it was wearing a blue shirt and pants (inmate colors). They put it on the inside of the bathroom door so you wouldn't see it until you look in the mirror when washing your hands. SO I piss, go to wash my hands and just kind of notice the person shaped figure in blue out of the corner of my eye, out of habit I whip my baton out and yell "Get the fck down!" loud as hell at 0450 hours, then notice it's a door sticker and just started laughing. Whoever put it up (never found out who) got me damn good.

Well, last few days were wild, too much sht but nothing funny…
So something on the more fun side. Working D yard as SPO #4 (I spent 5 years on D yard, so a lot of stories from there) and we had a dog program at the time, basically we got about 8 puppies and the best behaved inmates got to be dog handlers. They trained the dogs to be put up for adoption, this was part of 'rehabilitation.' At first I thought it was dumb, but it really did improve the yard, less incidents and it was just nice to pet a dog when you were having a bad day, it went away for a bit but we just brought it back again; amazing seeing the attitude change in guys when they just get a chance to play fetch with a dog, srs.
Anyways… we are just watching the yard, nothing much going on, the dogs are out running around and we have an alarm in D 1, it's a fight. We all go running, inmates on the yard sit down when Observation uses the PA to put the yard down, during an alarm all inmates are required to sit down, if you don't we assume you are involved or are 'Disobeying an Order' which is a write up. As we go running all the dogs, not knowing better, come chasing us and running with us as the dog handlers are sitting yelling at the dogs to sit and stay, well the dogs ignore them and as we run into the building we have about 8 dogs run in with us. The second we get in the inmates fighting see about 9 cops and 8 dogs run in and they just stop and look at the dogs and us like WTF is going on…
The immediately stop fighting and stand there confused by what they are seeing, this is fcking hilarious; they get down right away, no one wants to be the ******* who fights around the dogs. As they are down we are trying to cuff them up and the dogs are getting in the way, trying to lick the guys we are cuffing, and trying to play with them and us. We keep having to push the dogs off and everyone is laughing so hard at how stupid this whole thing is, even the guys who were fighting are laughing. Killed all the tension and made the whole incident go way better than it could have.
-We liked the dogs so much someone actually made trading cards, like pokemon cards, for each dog and gave them out, gotta collect 'em all! Sometimes work is just fun. Wish I had a picture of one but this was years back, not sure we still have any floating around.

On the unfun note, how this job, or any first responder job really, can fck with you. Think: EMT, Nurse, Officer, Sheriff, Cop, Corrections, Military… anything like that.
I wanted to visit family for a week, so I hammered out shift swaps for 2 weeks, I worked 96 hours a week for both weeks; I had maybe 2 years in at the time and had not seen family much. I moved 200+ miles for the job so visiting was kind of rare, especially since I was getting used to the job at first.
Anyways… I get a week off, I worked a double shift (16 hours) then drove 4 hours, no sleep just a shower, all the way from Coalinga to Citrus Heights, awake for about 30 hours and I am going to dinner with my whole family. While we are waiting to be seated my sister-in-law thinks it would be funny to mess with me. She thinks trying to sneak my wallet out of my back pocket would be a good joke. No. Just fcking no. I am strung out and there is no reason, ever, that anyone would ever (at work) be that close to me from behind. She gets near me and I sense it, like I just feel it out of habit that someone is behind me, as she went closer to me I spun and almost railed her in the jaw. I would have broken her jaw easily but luckily training kicked in: Look, then hit, I came within inches of busting her sht up, but managed to pull my punch.
I cannot sit near a door with my back to it, I need to see all doors, anyone walking by gets a side eye, not that I am trying to be rude but it's habit…
If I am standing in line at the grocery store I stand back to something so I am sideways, I DO NOT like people behind me, and if you get too close I will ask (once) for you to give me space. I ASK once, after that it goes right to I make you step back, "Hey guy (lady) take a step back you're up in my sht…" Most do it, if you don't then I will make it volumous when I say "Hey, take a step back", it's habit.

Forgetting the rest, this was back in 2018 or so when they first started it.
Nala was a savage, we had a lot of gophers on the yard and she killed them all, ate them; it was nice because tripping in a gopher hole took out a lot of staff and inmates.

Good for your Dad getting a chance to call you, when I was in a booth I'd always let people get a birthday call or let them call family on birthdays, I would look up to see birthdays and let them have an hour from 1800-1900 when we were down after chow. Normally calls are 15 minutes and only when we had dayroom, but hey, birthdays I can make an exception.

So, working A Yard, the one week I don't have shift swaps since my swap partner had training, I'd just signed up for overtime because the night shift always gets forced for overtime and if I'm staying I at least want to pick my job.
So anyways I did back to back double shifts, I think I'm good off a hold but fck me, we have a Code 3 medical transport (Code 3 is the highest medical emergency, ambulance rolling lights and sirens). I go to get a State Van, my partner is going in the ambulance, luckily it's my friend so if nothing else I know it will be chill. So I never see the inmate, they give me no info on him, you know like why is going to the ER for example, sht I might like to know. So I get to the ER and this inmate had drank so much they found him non-responsive and cell covered in puke on the first count. So I walk in and the ER nurses are trying to get the guy to say or do something and I notice this guy is a porter for D 2, a guy I knew for years.
I go right up and yell "You? You stupid piece of sht motherfcker!" He just sits up and says "Fcking Bullock, why are you her?"
The nurse just says "Oh, he moved. He's fine."
The only time he'd talk was when I spoke to him, it was funny how nurses had to get me to talk to him for them.
We had to sit there for 14 hours until he was 'sober' enough to be released. He couldn't stop puking the whole drive back, but fck it, medical at the prison cleared him too so my happy ass was good.
Every time the nurses weren't looking we'd try to wake him up, tap his foot or something like that. Hey guy, I got better sht to do than be in the ER on a Saturday.
Are you a correctional officer? If so…how dangerous is the job
RIP Pedro Suarez Vertiz. Te queremos Hermano
If your right leg is Thanksgiving and your left leg is Christmas, can I come and visit you between the holidays?

Dangerous depends on a lot of things: which prison, and how you carry yourself are the biggest things I'd say. If you give respect you get respect for example. Were I work a gopher hole takes out more people than inmates, running to an alarm on the yard gets a lot of people.

Another short on but… the top of our grenades can unscrew from the canister and you can dump out the OC blast powder or CN/CS gas, older cans can come loose and leak powder. So we're sitting in the Program Office and all day we've been coughing, just a slight cough all day and we think it's allergies or something. We have an alarm in Medical, probably false since they always hit their alarm on accident but we all go running. As we are running my friend stop and starts yelling "Fck fck fck…" turns out the top on his blast grenade had been loose and fell full off while he was running, his whole right leg is now coated in OC powder and he's dying as he tries to shake it off, ends up making it was worse since now the powder is in the air. He's yelling his balls are on fire and all we do is laugh at him, alarm was false so nothing to do there, my friend just goes to program and cleans off best he can.
Upside is he got to go home early, downside is we called him Powdered Donut or Snowball for months.

Another thing we have have to be paranoid about is chair arm rests, the amount of time a can of OC snags and goes off….
I'm working in CTC my partner and I are in an equipment cage and we hand out equipment, escort the nurses when they need it and deal with everything involving the inmates admitted to the back, all are medical or mental health that need hospital level care. Medical guys are pretty easy, just go with the nurse and stand by when they check vitals or hand out meds or dressing changes. The mental health are hit or miss, some chill and others lose their sht at the slightest thing.
At the time nothing is going on so my partner and I are just sitting in the cage, maybe a 10x10 little room, and BSing before the next med pass. He stands up to go to the bathroom and his OC spray snags the chair and gives me a nice 2 second stream right into my arm, luckily missing my head. Motherfcker, I'm hating life as I go to wash it off, not going home over this, fck that. He had to spend about an hour decontaminating the office and to a quick memo as to why CTC stank like OC, no trouble since sht happens but it made the next few hours suck ass for me.
When I finally got home I jumped in the shower and forgot that the OC spray would reactivate again, so I got to feel like my arm was on fire again for an hour or so.
