Ended up renting the 200-500mm Nikon with a 1.4x Tele for the Badlands trip in December 2019, used on my Nikon D7100. Same body and time of year as last year when I rented the Tamron 150-600mm, so comparison was about as fair as you could get. Absolutely great lens, should've taken the tele off to get a better feel for the lens but I had forgotten it was on, and am always a sucker for that extra reach. Also pleased to see that I had very little cropping to do, part of the reach I suppose but makes me feel good about my speed compositions.

I've recently started carrying my camera with me more often which has led to me dabbling in street photography. I'm really enjoying the candidness and uniqueness of each time I go out.

I've strictly been shooting with my 85 1.8, as it's my only prime at the moment, but am considering picking up a 35 1.8. For those of you shooting on the street, what focal lengths have you found yourself gravitating towards?

Yeah, I've definitely found myself in quite a few situations where I wanted to be able to capture more of the scene for added context. I'll start with the 35 and go from there.

On another note, how active are people on IG with their photography? The Flickr group doesn't see much action these days.

I have a nifty fifty. Only problem is my camera's diopometer (sp?) is fukked. I either have to rely on the viewfinder or the camera sensor (when the green light pops up). That creates its own issues from time to time.

Maybe not street photography, per se, but in terms of architecture & landscape, I'm going to be getting a 10-24 lens with my tax return.

I shoot APS-C but i've found most of my street shots are at 35mm equivalent or lower. Personally I prefer a wider focal length setup for street and then just crop in post. Moments are fleeting and you have to be quick, so i find using a wider angle means less room for error.

Finally got around to getting photoshop. Messing around with a sky swap for shts and giggles. Things seem a bit fake in the far distance in the center of the image. Can't really seem to find a guide on correcting that, at least not in this particular type of image. Feel like it needs to be a little hazy or something, I don't know. Anyone have any tips or thoughts?

This is really a loaded question because there will be a lot of reasons to just answer it depends .

For the vast majority of "non experts" (as you said), your phone will be equipped with a camera that works for the vast majority of photo opportunities. What type of photography are you interested in? Unless you are frequently taking pictures with extreme ranges of dynamic light, shutter speeds, or plan on printing in extreme resolution then you can save a lot of weight and aggravation by using your phone.

If you are intent on using your full body camera, then a 24-70mm alongside a 70-200mm will cover most all reasonable zoom ranges. And you can save money and weight by investing in an F/4 over an F/2.8 or lower aperture lens.

24-105 f4.. I've got the Sony version and I dont take it off the camera for the most part. Id say in the past year I've taken it off like 3 or 4 times.

Agreed. Really perfect composition, and quality editing. I spent some time soaking that one in, which is pretty rare.

I've been taking my Sony RX100 V around with me lately instead of the big camera. This little compact is really a powerhouse. Amazing what it can do in such a small size, nice shooting RAW & M with a compact.

Now I'm in that familiar situation of having a camera full of photos and slacking off on editing them.

Not sure about photoshop. On lightroom you could try adding a Radial Filter to the area, click the invert button and adjust the dehaze slider. That would allow you to add haze or remove it to your needs.

I know misc has (rightfully) a bad perception of Reddit, but there are a lot of communities that do critique reviews or are just good to get visibility. I find that /r/itookapicture/ , /r/EarthPorn/ , /r/photocritique/ are good. Else you can try entering some of your photographs into some online competitions. For example sites like Lens Culture do competitions, just be wary of the terms and conditions.

I think photography can be treated as an end in itself. The whole process from planning to shooting to editing to whatever else might come after should be seen as a great way to spend your time and enjoy life regardless of how much exposure the photos get.

For me, I'll send some photos to friends and family but rarely post them elsewhere. I really like just having a visual log of my life, the places and people I love. Looking back at years-old photos is a really pleasurable activity. Some rare few I'll print and put up in my home. One in particular I took of my girl and me on a Caribbean vacation on a little private beach we found. It was one of the best days of my life. I blew the photo up huge and framed it and now I see it every single day and get to relive that day in a small way. It makes my everyday life better being there on the wall.

For my 3 month old son and future children I'm planning on doing a Shutterstock album for each year with all of our family highlights. Sitting down with family and looking at old albums is just such an awesome thing to do.

I don't even remember what company I used for the big one, which was the only one I cared a lot about getting a good quality print. Usually I'll print little ones and put a few of them in a frame so the quality is not all that important. Shutterstock is good for that. I'm sure there are a million good companies out there though.

edit: I meant shutterfly
