been getting acclimated with some of the local birders in my area

learned about a cool spot for short eared owls, which I didn't even know existed

taken with the 600mm f4 basically at dusk. SUPER happy with how it turned out.

I was shooting with 3 other guys who had 400mm f2.8s and I was really wishing I had that wider aperture

currently trying to figure out how to fit $13k into my budget for an RF 400mm now

since I got that expensive 600mm, I got a Personal Property Policy from State Farm. About $50/mo and allegedly they fully replace any gear stolen, dropped, damaged by water, etc. no questions asked. will let everyone know if I end up making any claims. certainly gives peace of mind.

haven't been out shooting much lately, but looking forward to when we get some consistent snow on the ground

I also used Canvas on Demand to buy a bunch of large prints (10 x 8 up to 36 x 24) for some Christmas presents for people as well as one for my own wall

During Black Friday I swapped from using Lightroom + Photoshop with the Topaz Suite (Denoise, Gigapixel, and Sharpen) over to DXO PhotoLab Elite 5. What a world of change. I love it.

Here are some shots with the R5 + RF 600mm F4, edited in DXO.

I also bought an EF 400mm F2.8 last night for about $5,000. if I like it, I may go get a new 0% APR credit card and purchase the RF version instead. At 8.5lbs the EF II isn't terrible, but the 6.3lbs of the RF version would be noticeably nicer.

I don't know that I need $25k in RF wildlife primes, so I'll probably see which I like better (400 f2.8 or 600 f4) and then sell one.

also looking for a good EF 200mm F2 for portraiture and close wildlife. will probably sell my RF 70-200 f2.8 to get it.

my first photo print came back too, 36" x 24" of a Grizzly Bear I got in Yellowstone this year

I'm blown away by the quality. gives me a ton of motivation to get out there and take more pics

R5 Master Race

There was a pretty decent building fire near me so I went out with the R5 and the Sigma 150-600.

Conditions were getting dark, overcast, and smoky. Really tested my skills in bad lighting and I do need improvement. The majority of my shots were completely unusable/not sharp. Out of 170 pics I ended up with 3. Mostly burst shots too

I need a steadier hand for darker conditions, I found myself cranking the ISO here, but here are the 3 I ended up with after Lightroom.

What's the lowest aperture on the Sigma 150-600 at this focal length? Long focal lengths at night is always difficult as the aperture is usually higher, unless of course you have a fixed low f-stop zoom lens at all ranges. Were the rest unusable due to blur?

Love this 2nd pic. Also it seems odd to me that you had so many shots that weren't usable/sharp. How do you have autofocus setup? I have like a 95% keeper rate with the R5 no matter what I shoot.

Unless it was just so dark, and with such a "slow" lens, you couldn't get the shutter speed where you needed it to be to capture action or something..

Editing style on point.

Something I really need to do is invest more time into learning and perfecting editing. I had a pretty humbling experience on FB this week with another wildlife photographer.

Here I am using like $20k worth of gear, and he has barely $2k invested and his shots were far superior to mine. All came down to editing.

Thanks bro. The lens tops out at F5, but at this length was probably closer to 7. The aperature was slow enough that I just wasn't steady enough with it, the lens is absolutely huge too so I was kinda shaky with it. They were unusable due to a combination of bad composition, blur, and not being sharp. The environment got dark fast, I probably had 30 minutes to do what i wanted. I cant wait to go out with it again in some better conditions though

Thanks appreciate that bro. And yeah my AF is set up, I just think the combination of aperture and shutter speed along with the sun going down was too much for my skill level but I do want to go and practice some more because I do see some people shooting at night no problem. Lightroom really fixed these pics a bit too.

The R3 was just released in September, and started shipping at the end of November I believe.

I have some ******** friends (professional wildlife photographers) who bought it and swear by it.

I'm pretty nervous, since the R5 is 45 MP and I'm used to that, which gives a TON of room for cropping. Moving to a "measly" 24.1MP is scary as hell.

The main draw was 30 FPS (up from 20 FPS), and then it has active eye tracking that looks at your retina, and can tell where in the frame you are looking. So basically its autofocus so advanced that it is actively looking where you are looking.

Worst case scenario if I don't like it, I should be able to sell it for more than I paid.

Jody Melanson who used to post incredible wildlife shots in here used a 10mp 1D Mk3 and later a 20mp 1DX Mk2. I just looked him up and he's since switched to an R5 but certainly doesn't need it to capture great images.

Having the latest technology is nice but skill, timing, planning, knowledge of conditions and the species he's photographing, tactical shoulder mount, camouflage, and the right lenses all combined to play a greater role in getting those images than the camera itself.

100%. But as a newbie who is still trying to find good spots for wildlife, often times I catch the animals in passing and I'm quite a distance away

the MP helps bridge that gap when you just can't get as close to a subject as you'd like

even with the 600mm + 1.4x (840mm f5.6) I was still too far away. I should've put on the 2x since light wasn't really an issue. Ohwell, live and learn. Hope to be back up that way as soon as next weekend

the only downside I found - as expected, the MP count.

however, using Topaz Gigapixel AI I was able to mainly overcome that. 95% chance I end up selling my R5 now

How important is shutter clicks on a DSLR when shopping used?

Ive been looking at used d810's to upgrade from my d7100 because they've come down to around 1000 dollars canadian and its hard to justify spending 2-3k on a new mirrorless when i can get one of the best dslr's of the decade for like 1/3rd its msrp. The other option would potentially be the a7r2 for around the same used.

How many clicks am i looking at before its maybe going to be affecting performance or just not worth my time. Ive seen cameras with anywhere from 10k-100k clicks

I've never used DSLR, but I think shutter clicks are important since everyone lists it when selling a body.

IIRC most DSLR go like 200k - 500k before needing replaced.

the nice thing for mirrorless now is that shutter doesn't matter, since all the best mirrorless you shoot in electronic 100% of the time. so in theory they'd go forever.

FWIW I got my R5 in 07/2021 and had shot 52,000 images before I just sold it today

ya I was looking at nikons site and it said the d810 is good for 500k clicks, just not sure when things start to go funky. like if there's a difference between 50k vs 150k clicks other than life expectancy
