Offering my measlies for anyone that can help with my poverty question.

Looking for a camera for my wife but I don't really know where to start looking as I tend to not really trust the review sites all that much. Looking for something up to about $500 but not a DSLR as we had what was essentially the precursor to the Nikon D3300 and it was too complex and she never really got the hang of all the features. Plus the size and having to change out the full size lenses was always a bit cumbersome. Should I be looking at mirrorless? Or higher end point and shoots or the compacts with interchangeable lenses? Thanks brahs.

honestly, people like her probably just use their iphones to take 99% of their pictures anyways…. even if she did buy a $500 point and shoot

No she actually does care about the quality of the pictures and hates the quality of her phone pictures and used the hell out of an old Canon point and shoot until it broke like 2 years ago then we got the DSLR and sold it a year later. She just doesn't need anything like a DSLR.

fuking lol at this… terrible, Canon.

I am getting so itchy to buy the A7Rii and *yet again* swap to a different system. The only two things holding me back: lack of a good Sony UWA and lack of battery life on the A7Rii.

Just my 2 cents but I'd wait for Nikon to get their hands on that sensor.

Save your money for a 24 1.4 Zeiss Otus when it materializes. A quick two shot pano with that razor sharp beast would cover your UWA needs. 50% overlap shouldn't result in a lot of parallax and nothing software wouldn't be able to fix with a lot of random patterns in nature. 110 FOV. More than 14mm.

Can't wait to see what you capture around WA/Oregon.

If she didnt like changing lenses on the DSLR, she wont like it on a mirrorless either, so your best bet would be a high-end p&s, imho.
Sony RX100M4(or the M3 with a bit more reach and cheaper now) or the Panasonic LX100 are some of the best available, the Canon G7 X could also fit the bill

i'm probably gonna be personally looking into the lens market soon too.
Need a cheap, wide lens for concerts and nightclubs. The key is cheap, and small. Something low liability. I'd prefer not to get my expensive and high liability 24-70 2.8 tamron in there all the time (very heavy, pricey, and if someone spills a drink i'm fukd). I'd rather have a nice cheap prime thats in the 20-35mm range.

A.k.a does not exist.

That would be something. I've wanted an Otus 24mm for a while .

Still very happy with 36mp crew. I know if I'm stopping down to f/8 for landscapes, as more diffraction is resolved by those extra pixels I'm not going to see a whole lot more detail with 42mp or whatever the next sensor is. They've reached a point of diminishing returns with a FF size sensor IMO. I can also get as much resolution as I need shooting panos.

Not cheap but a Nikon 20 or 24 1.8 would make a great lens for that kind of photography on a second body to go with a 50 or 85 1.8. Anything over 2.8 would be too slow in a nightclub unless you're going to be blasting flash.

Nothing beats a good prime. When my 85 1.4 is on the camera I want to go out and shoot portraits. I have an emotional connection to it. As nice as the 70-200 2.8 is for people, after 5 minutes it just feels like a heavy, obtrusive lump of metal.

I remember seeing something about the 50mp Canon 5DSr that said diffraction does factor in, but nonetheless you still see gains. Just diminishing returns at that point.

Glad to see the thread still going strong. Feels bad I've been gone so long, haven't kept up on tech as much as I used to, or have taken the time to take pictures. I hope everyone is doing well, gonna have a lot of catching up to do. Recently changed computers and haven't moved over anything I have taken. Been trying to get set up to do Twitch streaming and YouTube videos and have been learning those ways.

Can't leave without posting a picture so here's an obligatory picture of me at the convention this weekend. Got to meet a lot of my favourite comic book artists like George Perez and had a chance to see Stan Lee. It's been a great weekend and I just had to stop in and send happy vibes to my brahs here. Cheers all.

I still really like the Nikon CoolPix P510 that I used before upgrading to a DSLR. It does a great job for landscape and wildlife photography IMO. Very affordable too, compared to DSLR, user friendly, no need to swap out lenses, the "zoom" is what hooked me 5ish years ago. It's good at landscape and wildlife, not the best for low light situations, but 90% of my shots are on the trail.

I have a Nikon 10-24mm that wasn't that expensive, pretty happy with it, 90% of my shots in the Canyons last week were with it, performed well. Could probably have made it work with like a 12mm prime, didn't find myself adjusting the range often at all.

Nice picture ANP makes me think of FinalReps photos, sorry about your loss.

djoel08 I like the lens flares in those more casual shots, did you increase the detail in post processing? Almost has a grunge type look IMO, but faintly, I have never gotten the hang of portraits, probably due to never doing them.

Thinking about trading in my 50mm for a 35mm, the 50 just doesnt suit my style currently, I am sure I am using it in the wrong settings or with the wrong mindset, but It hasn't proved to be very useful for me currently, trip through Boston or through Utah, the wider angle worked better.

I agree. Primes would be the best no doubt about it. Getting down to 1.4 would be killer. even 35mm 1.4 art would probably work perfect. Hnng.

But 800 bucks and 1 person acting like a dumbass with the cam = 800 bucks down the drain.

To be fair, that logic would apply to any glass you got. Even if you picked up a $250 "cheap" prime and a tragedy befalls it, you're down $250.

$250 is $250.

$250 is $250.
it all depends on the amount of $$ you are willing to risk. 250 is much less of a gamble then 800. Lets say the damage is minor enough that nikon would be willing to fix. If that is the case, the parts are also usually cheaper for the cheaper lens.

Risking a 50mm 1.8 which is only 100 bucks and even less used means a lot less than risking a 900+ lens imo.

Guys I'm off travelling South East Asia soon and I'd like to take quality pictures, film and take up photography as a hobby.

I'm considering purchasing a compact camera that's under or around 300 / $465. Any recommendations? I'm open to purchasing used equipment.

The photos will be used to support a blog and ideally the camera should be able to shoot 1080p at least or 4k as I'd like to put together a 'highlights' video after my trip.

Something similar to the canon g7x would be ideal (I don't like how slow the auto focus and noise of zooming in on the camera as it could impact videos). An adjustable flip screen would be ideal as I'll be travelling solo so this will help myself view how the videos are recording while filming.

Thanks for the help.

Have you considered an iphone 6S?

I am being totally serious. I honestly don't mess with anything smaller than APS-C. I know the RX-100 are going to be better but not worth the price difference IMO.

people have shot amazing things on the iphone

2 examples here
http://iphonephotographyschool.com/mariko-klug/
http://iphonephotographyschool.com/jeremy-searle/

the 6S will do 4K and it is actually a big step up over the 6 in terms of image quality.

I have actually considered phones as I need a new one soon anyhow.

The LG G4 looks good quality also and the Samsung Galaxy S6.. can't go wrong with any of those tbh. It's something for me to think about..

Compact camera vs Phone.. hmm
