I'm sorry to personalize this again, but in your past situation with that chick, I'm certain that with a different mindset 'doing your best' would have been quite different from how you in fact acted.

Mindset matters - even if you don't believe in positive thinking it should be pretty obvious that negative thoughts can f*ck you up. There are plenty of people who seemingly have a lot going for them, and yet despite that they are miserable/self-destructive/continuously failing.
I doubt that some 5 0', deformed & crippled manlet would ever start pulling mad tail if they "had the right mindset", however, I bet ya there are billions of pretty capable people who are not realizing much of their potential, and consequently living loser lives because their negative perspective is holding them back.
