RB, just got home and this room is as hot as balls so I've got a fan running with the backing track for a no frills phone recording. Always loved this song but never learned it so going by memory. This should give you a sense of the tone I've got cooking at bedroom volume.

Lol at tony montana.

Ah I see now what you mean by needing extra gain/boost for that Vai tone. Your tone is organic af which probably doesn't happen when there's too much gain.

The older I get the less gain I tend to use I notice. There's just more dynamics available with lower gain settings.

This is a great interpretation of the track.

Appreciate the feedback gentlemen. Not easy to play like Vai with 12s in standard. All those nuances in his playing come out with 9s. Still fun.

I think that is about the same time when Roland came out with it's mesh heads….which I tested at a local Guitar Center.

For me, they take some getting used to because the rebound has a much different feel to adjust too.
I had to sell them back in 2002 because I wasn't in live bands anymore and they took up a lot of storage real estate.
Plus….when I bought the set back in '77 it came with (3) mtd. toms, (2) floors and (2) kick drums.
I never used the 2nd kick or 2nd floor tom at gigs for obvious reasons.

Being a music/geology major I did take Drums/Percussion classes to get the academics of rudiments down.
I still have my practice pad/sticks from my college days.
No, I haven't practiced in a loooong time because song writing and playing guitar became my creative priority.

Mornin' roller….

Well….you've spend a good chunk on a damn fine Roland kit.

Just a few questions:
1) Do you actually want to become reasonably proficient?
2) What grip will you be employing: traditional or match?
3) Depending on your responses above: do you have a practice pad?

Inquiring minds like to know.
Oh….when do you receive the kit?

Good luck on your drumming quest

1) I would at least like to become as technically proficient on the drums as I am on the guitar.
2) Matching, I don't like the aesthetic look of traditional lol.
3) I do not have a practice pad, should I get one in addition to my e-drum unit?
4) Delivery should be on Monday.

Thanks Wayne.

Ha….holy shvt….you have to figure a way to get to sleep for the next two nights in anxious anticipation!

I've always uses match grip and so did my college professors but had no hate for trad grip.
I've watched the Krupa/Rich videos and I see it's application more so in the jazz & big band genres.

After you get out some initial pad pounding I have some unsolicited advice which you are free to ignore:
1) Don't be in a hurry. Good, relaxed, controled learning technique resides in the the wrists….not the elbows and forearms.
2) Learn the rudiments and play them slowly & deliberately.
3) Yes….get a drum pad for practicing said rudiments. This is the one I still have: https://rvb-img.reverb.com/image/upl...70wruyxlvn.jpg
I preferred the wood base because the rebound felt better to me.
4) When hitting the pad think of it as you were swatting a fly on your leg….as soon as the stick meets the pad, anticipate that rebound and lift the stick . Focus on those lift muscles on each stroke. The pad is portable and you can get good practice in anywhere without bothering anyone.

I'd guess Monday can't arrive quick enough.
Maybe a couple pics for us droolers?

Hope that helps….terminating unsolicited advice.

That's great advice, thank you very much Wayne. I'm all about the wrists haha.

I will look into getting a practice pad as well. I will post some pics when I have it set up, might be on Wednesday when I have a day off lol.

Well….

If you don't mind me occasionally throwing out one of my several play-alongs I'll employ some courage in case it helps others who may want to learn it.
Per a request, I added the chords/lyrics to one of my responses.

Any Alan Parsons fans here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ih2...nnel=chulaivet

I thought
about posting a new MISC. thread but didn't think it would go well with the genre preferences I seem to perceive here.

Thanks to anyone who gives it a spin.

Nice, Wayne.

You know what I’d like to hear you play? The Stones song “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking”. I feel like you have the right tone and hands for that riffing.

For those who do their own setup work how do you guys setup your guitars? Like specifically in terms of neck relief, action height, pickup height, that kind of thing. I added another guitar to the stable and did a full setup myself but basically I adjusted it to Gibson factory spec.

Mornin' roller….

I haven't selected any Stones songs to play along with.
Sheesh….an oldie, thanks for the endorsement.
I'm not sure I could do it justice if Keith's G6 tuning was employed.

Thanks for checking it out.

Mornin' Dom….

Absolutely!

Our lead guitarist worked in a music store in '77 & '78.
I think it was a 1st order demo which he used for a couple years then I bought it '78 for 275$.

Thanks for giving a listen and kind comment.

My TD-27KVX is actually coming in on Wednesday. I hope my Lezbaru WRX is capable of accommodating the girthy shipping box that Roland puts it in.

Remember that old game Gauntlet? The dungeon crawler one with the monster generators? This drums set is like a monster generator in terms of G.A.S. I've already been scouring reverb for add-ons/upgrades to this thing.
I also want to get Superior Drummer 3 which makes want to get a Macbook (which makes me regret getting that expensive iPad Pro). This then makes me want to get a legit audio interface to accommodate the drum module. WARRIOR NEEDS FOOD BADLY.

What?…Wednesday!
I register the kit online with Roland and keep that manual within arms reach and enjoy the assembly process. (with a libation of choice)

I just checked out what a Lezbaru WRX is.
Hmm….that could be a tight fit but I'll wish you luck for one trip to the store for pickup.

If you continue on your current path of interest an audio interface would be on the list in your future.
I don't know shvt about Macs or the ipad Pro so I can't offer any suggestion with any credibility.

I'm pretty consistent across types:

Relief: 0.010
Action: 5/64
Pickup height: around 4-5/64 adjusted for toan

Pretty close to my setup on this new guitar

Relief is set to .012

Action is 5/64 on the bass side and 4/64 on the treble side

Pickup height is dialed in to similar measurements

Living where I do I'm not interested in wanking the truss rod every week so I set up mine for humidity and when it's in air conditioning there's more relief. Medium to medium-high action.

"We've got Eruption at home."

That's yet another terrible red light fever version of Eruption. I have clear fukk-ups all over the place no need to point them out - my picking hand also seized up during the tremolo picking part lol. And I fukked up the easiest part of the solo - the tapping part.

I play this about 50% better without the red light on and yet this is literally the best I've ever recorded this stupid fukking solo, felt cute but will delete later.

Ha….

I've been recording myself for 45 years and I still get anxious when I engage the "red light".
If it's a rhythm guitar track I can nail it in a few takes.
If it's a vocal track?….shvt….I may spend a few days just to get the lead vox to meet my personal expectations.
Then, time to tackle BGV….another few days.

Back to it.

Just an old guy trying to keep up his rhythm chops.
