I paid like $500 for this right before the trip and it looks like the price has since jumped to $700 geez

Thanks brah

Yeah when I do panos I just do it manual on a tripod and match what I see w/ my eyes and use software to stitch it correctly

yeah I was too lazy to do that. the little Genie product I posted is slick'r'n'****

you tell it your focal length and how much overlap you want (I usually do 40%) and it figures out the rest. here are some other panos from the trip.

I'm getting more into landscape/astro photography but feel like I'm pretty garbage so far

pretty crazy this is all the same mountain range (Tetons) and all within 48 hours lol

we were fortunate to be there for basically the last snow of the season everyone is expecting

10/10

Awesome place

Tbh I didn’t even know that pano thing existed before you posted

I want to get into it more but there’s other lenses I’m shooting for. I need to swap out my 70-200 since my 1-500 and 85 kind of cause it to be dead weight rn

Just wondering if you guys can recommend any good forums for someone starting out? Seems to be so many out there. Signed up on dpreview (lol?) but looks a bit dated.. not sure.

Just got myself a Nikon D810, with 2 lenses on the grey market/Ebay/Japan - SIGMA Art 35mm F1.4 DG HSM and a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G ED VR IF. Plus a better monitor and a bunch of extras. Been reading up, watching youtube channels etc. for a few weeks now and feel a bit better - was always a bit intimidated by all the technical aspects.

Had this as a hobby for a bit in 88-89 as a teen, created a darkroom in our wardrobe and learned to develop film at home with all those chemicals etc…..so hoping this could be something again or I just wasted too much money. Plan to try a variety of different types of shooting at first…and just keep reading etc. Only gotten through a few pages here so far but some nice photos for sure. Beautiful landscapes there, Positivecrew.

a lot. mainly for buying and selling items, but they also have general discussion threads

as far as learning, most of that comes from YouTube. there's a wealth of knowledge out there. I've been binging Allyn Wallace for Astrophotography lately

Thanks, will have a look at that place. Did watch a bunch of youtube - probably spend most time with Tony & Chelsea Northrup so far - they touch on many topics and questions I had and seem to have great tutorials for my specific (and other) camera as well.

I just realized we have some really old family albums, some still with film/negatives in there , so wondered if could convert it to digital and there seems to be all these inexpensive slide/negative scanners on amazon that can save it to something like 22MP (saw 69MP on one) on an SD card. Would be cool to bring some of that old stuff to life again with some modern editing etc. Not only stuff from my childhood, but a lot of stuff from the 30's-60's. Remember we had some cool photos of grandma's cousin or something like that - on horseback in Mexico in the 30's, working for Ericsson setting up phone lines.

looking forward to some more shooting soon

added a Canon EOS Ra (astro modified Canon R) to my arsenal, a Rokinon 24mm F1.4, a Sigma 14mm F1.8, and am about to change up my tripod and head game quite a bit too

have a vacation to Colorado in July as well as a couple of camping trips coming up that should be fun with the Fuji X100V

Tetons are beautiful if you can ever make it over. Although the fjords in Norway are high on my list.

As far as sunrise/sunset times, I just google "location sunrise/sunset"

I use the app Photopills for anything relating to the sun, moon, etc.

I think it's a paid app, but forget what it cost since it was so cheap and SO WORTH IT.

about to leave for 5 days to the UP of Michigan for waterfalls, milky way, and hopefully a chance at some northern lights. the last few weekends have been great for northern lights but it looks quiet so far of course

here's a pic I took last weekend near my parents house

Canon EOS Ra + Rokinon 24mm f1.4 @ f1.4, 30s, ISO-400

I think I missed focus also I probably need a faster shutter speed as I see some star trails. but it's good practice!

Got super lucky with 3 back to back nights of intense aurora activity from Friday - Monday!

I tried some panos which are basically impossible, so I ended up with a lot of wasted opportunity. I think time lapse is the way to go for Auroras.

Awesome first opportunity though

I guess I'm an aurora chaser now.

a local fb group had a meetup about 7 hours north of my place so I headed up on Thursday night worked in the hotel Friday, and was all ready to go

lots of clouds and the showing wasn't as good as expected, but still a ton of fun to shoot the **** with 100+ other photographers who traveled up as well

aurora / milky way stuff is pretty addictive. I've accumulated a ton of gear lately and haven't shot any wildlife since my trip to Yellowstone at the end of May

definitely has me contemplating selling my big 600 F4 prime and becoming a filthy casual with a zoom lens instead

hanging out with tons of other photographers all shooting the same chit sounds bad a** srs

what focal length was that..?

damn man i probably wouldn't sell a 600mm/f4. it'll come in handy. besides i thought you shot wildlife with that

ive got the sigma 60-600 and on bright *** days not having an f4 makes next to no difference aside from DOF not being what it is with an f4. but that 60-600 is versatile asf.

sometimes i pair that with a 2x TC and shoot airliners from my patio and you can clearly make out lettering on em. with some work in LR it can look hella sharp, all from a jet at cruise 35k feet above you. but anyways yeah, zooms are great. don't you already have like every lens in the book?

I believe that pic is the R5 with the Rokinon 24mm F1.4

and yeah I've owned pretty much every prime and zoom longer than 100mm that Canon has to offer. sold all of them except the RF 600 F4 and the RF 800 F11

A handful I was happy with today at the local park. Noticed some editing was off a bit in color and the stray cat pic is not super sharp but I like the shot regardless (like he's coming up from a fog to fk me up). Still a beginner and hope I can keep that excuse going for some time.

bruhhhh Sweden and the wildlife are gorgeous

all of these with the 150-600? what body?

the last 5 days have been absolute bangers for northern lights. have been up chasing them in the UP of Michigan all the way to Minnesota.

All taken with the Canon Ra + Rokinon 24mm F1.4

Someone explain why the **** you would buy a $2000 24-70 2.8 when you can buy 24/35/50 primes. 2 of which are 1.8's and the 24 being 2.8, for $800.

That is not $1200 worth of convenience and the extra 51mm - 70mm i guarantee you can do without.

Bag space, flexibility of a zoom. Are the primes weather resistant?

Just depends on what you're doing. If you're a run and gun wedding photographer, you don't have time to swap between a 24/35/50 prime. You keep your 24-70 on one body and 70-200 on the other body.

Great shots, especially like the last one - will have to try something like that eventually but it seems difficult.

I took them with a Nikon D810 and a Nikon AF-S 200-500/5,6E ED VR.

Have a 3 day trip planned this weekend for a 950 acre zoo with tigres, leopards, red pandas etc….so just hoping I get a few good ones.

Then plan to do perhaps several short trips in the coming year - they got several moose ranches here where you can rent a cabin in amongst the animals (deer and moose.) - and saw Denmark has a good place on the northern coast so can have a cheap cabin by the beach and not far from a place with eagles/falcons and various shows with them.

better glass and coatings, one lens vs 3, more durable/weather resistant, 9 blades vs 7 bokeh, and finally better images

https://jonathannotley.com/blog-cont...he-24-70mm-28g

i have both, I rarely use the 50 1.8 over the 24-70

edit: 50 1.8's a great lens though, it was my first. It shoots nicely and is cheap/ light
