Job Steward is pretty… boring. Basically if a C/O gets a grievance from an inmate or staff or adverse action from Admin I can represent them, I make sure C/O rights are protected, like a lawyer but I only deal with non-criminal cases.

I've been filed on for not giving an inmate a food tray in his cell; he had no restrictions and could walk to the dining hall, he just didn't want to so he filed on me, that got tossed, as one example.

I just read that Danny Masterson is getting transferred today to max security at Corcoran state prison for his 30 years to life sentence. Realistically, how fuсked is a guy like him? Will the other inmates fuсk with him just because they can?
Thx in advance.

Working A yard as SPO #1 and just doing my count in building 1 at the time, I then hear my partner over the radio "Central Control, be advised we have a possible suicide in Alpha 5, cell 101, dispatch the ERV." He said it so calmly that all of us on the yard just assume this guy is dead, so we just walk over, pissed that we have to deal with this sht tonight. We get to the building and go over to the cell, this fat motherfcker is laying on the ground pretending to be non-responsive (we can see him moving slightly when we yell at him) and acting like he tried to kill himself. One wrist had a small scratch on it, barely even bleeding, some toilet paper would have been fine to get that taken care of; his other wrist wasn't even bleeding, just scratched, and he had all of his property on the bunk in bins ready to go.
This ass hat just wanted off the yard so he is faking a suicide attempt, dammit, now we have to play along because policy even though we know he is faking. The ambulance gets there and we open the door and tell the guy to get up and lay in the gurney, we know he is faking it. Nope, he just lays there and mumbles he lost too much blood and can't move, douche you didn't even lost more than a few drops, but he wont move. We cuff him up and this guy is easily 300 pounds or more, and we have to drag his fat ass out of the cell then pick him up and put him into the gurney; we may have been a bit rough with it because, well, fcker weighs so much and we're mad as hell at this point.
The guy went to our onsite hospital, the psych doctor just rubber stamps the forms to put the guy on suicide watch, so he went over to another yard for 1 on 1 observation (nurse does it, though we can do it to based on staffing). So at least he wasn't our problem anymore after that.

Well last night could have gone annoying. Working A yard SPO# 1 and just doing a security check at the beginning of the shift, my partner and I each take half the building and it's pretty much a body check; make sure no one is dead, and if they are we catch it right away. So I get to cell 142 and the guy has the whole window on the door blocked up with cardboard, so I tap the door with my flashlight and tell him to take the window cover down. No response at all, so I tap the door again, still no response.
Out comes the baton and I start pounding the door, still telling the guy to take down the window cover. No response at all, no sound from the cell, fck. So we call everyone over to the building, always good to have as many people you can, and we open the food port on the door to look in. My partner just says "Fck I think he's hanging" the guy was just standing there, slightly slumped forward and for some reason he had a sock over his head like a mask. He's not moving, and my partner yells the guys name, he finally moves and walks to the door and takes down the window cover; he's obviously high but he's alive, it just looked like he had been hanging at first glance.
We ask him what he was doing and why he wasn't responding. He just says "I was bored and thought this would be funny." Motherfcker, we explain how not bored he is going to be if he pulls this sht again because we will be coming in there next time. He just shrugs and goes to sit on his bunk, weird but whatever, he's alive and responding now so we're good. Luckily he just went to sleep for the rest of the night, still never found out what the sock on the head was about but my guess is drugs made it seem like a good idea?
Just another day at work, but small sht like that is no big deal, had he been hanging it would have been a long night.

Heading to work in a minute, but we've been talking about this for a few days; 200 man riot, they attacked staff. We're still waiting to see if it was a one and done thing or if this is going to carry over into something more.

They mention "The past few months have been a particularly violent time for California prisons…" well no sht, go soft on inmates and give them everything, drop most of our write ups… it was predictable.

Working D Building 3 on the floor, it's recall so all the inmates are going into their cells, one jackass decides to jump in the shower; normally we can turn the water on or off, but some of the showers are busted so the water is always on or always off. This shower was one that was always on, we normally lock it up near recall but we forgot today. I tell the inmate to get out of the shower, he tells me to fck off and starts the water. Ok, fck off? I walk over and he knows I am not about to drag a naked wet guy out of the shower, not what I'm looking to do today. Instead I just tell him "Fine, take all the showers!" and I lock him in the shower. We can use the showers as temporary holding cells for up to 4 hours, so his happy ass can stay in there.
Obviously he is pissed and stops the water and yells for me to let him out, nah, we're on my time and I'll get to it when I damn well want. I went into the office, waited maybe 10 minutes and then went back over to the guy, "So, you want to lock it up now?" he just says yes, "We gonna have this problem again" he just says no. I let him out and he just locks it up while most of the building is laughing at him.
Fck with my down time and I'll fck with your whole day, never had that problem again in that building.

So get ready for a long one, been meaning to type something like this for a while but been lazy. This is pretty much an average 'slow' day for me, just got off a double shift and this is how the day went. Keep in mind this is a pretty standard day for me, 16 hour shift.
Started at 1400 working D Building 5 on the floor, my regular partners so all good so far! Get to the building and do our security check (make sure no one is dead) and talk to some of the inmates, how the day had been going and just BSing with them. So far boring. We go to the podium and just watch the dayroom, we then see an inmate standing outside the yard door and he is spinning in circles, like just spinning around. WTF? We do an inline, letting inmates in from the yard and letting them go into their cells, the guy who was spinning comes into the building and walks up to us at the podium and says "I almost got 3 spins in!" and he starts spinning Infront of us. We look at him, he's high as fck; we just tell him "Dude, go into your cell and don't come out for the rest of the day, your high and we don't want to deal with this sht right now."
He just says sure and goes in, well that was interesting. Right after that we have a porter come up to us, we have 11 bed moves to do, compaction which is when we cell guys who are alone with someone to make space for intake; we have 50ish coming this week to the building. Our porter is trying to explain who can move in with who, and he is so drunk he is slurring like hell and can barely stand. Suddenly he pukes all over the floor and falls over; luckily he's still responding so some other porters just carry him into his cell, fck it, we'll check on him and make sure he doesn't die every hour or so. Onto the next problem, a few of the guys are refusing cell mates. Nah, you don't get to refuse; suck, fck or fight. All but one just agree to a cell mate, one tells us he's going to fight whoever we put in there. He steps way too close to my partner while talking, less than a foot away so I tell him to step back a bit, he looked confused until he noticed both of us were about to pull our batons. If an inmate is withing punching distance while talking to me sht is about to go bad for someone; he stepped back though, but he was still agitated. OK guy, well get at it, fight him, we'll wait a few minutes to step in. He still refuses to go into the cell so we 'escort' him to the cell and just shut the door, they'll figure it out. 10 minutes go by and we go to check, they're just watching TV and eating some ramen together… again WTF? Whatever, not our problem now, just a lot of bitching and moaning for nothing.
Recall rolls around at, all normal, then dinner, still normal. We open up for yard and dayroom again and since it's raining every damn inmate decides to stay in the dayroom, great. We notice a lot are drunk or high, gotta love Sundays. We send about a dozen out of the 90 or so who came out back to their cells, more sht we ain't got time for. Luckily, again, it got quite for us after that for the rest of that shift…
On to my next shift, 2200-0600, A Yard SPO# 4, I only have 1 regular partner and my regular Sgt.; 2 of my partners are new cops who have never done SPO spots before. Fcking great, gonna be training them all night; we give them our rundown of how we do things, what their jobs are, how we do alarms or emergencies, ect. Cool, they're listening and aren't dumb, so far so good. Until it wasn't. They pop my regular partner for a hospital run, now it's just me and 2 new cops, fckin' awesome.
Well, night goes smooth, until towards the end, we have 2 inmates who are being transferred to a different prison, the one in my building I woke up was ready to go, great! I ask the new cop how the guy he told was, he said the guy was ready to go. Sht, this is awesome, normally we have someone refuse to transfer, well, no isn't an option, they can walk to Receive & Release (R&R), or we can walk you. So the Control Booths pop out the guys who are transferring and it's 0518, we are off at 0600; the guy I told came out no problem, the guy the new cop told just closed his door. Fck, last thing I want to do at the end of the shift is 'make' a guy walk to R&R. So I walk to the building and ask the guy what is wrong. Well, new cop didn't actually talk to him, turns out the guy just wants to bring his property with him. Normally they have their property packet up a week before they transfer, but this guy was at a doctors appointment so they skipped him. Fck, that's an easy fix, grab your sht, I don't care. He packs his stuff, it takes maybe 5 minutes and he's good to go. My Sgt. and I were all stressed for nothing in the end, new cop just didn't know how to talk to inmates, no social skills at all, which is annoyingly common now.
Just another day at work.
So they get taken to R&R, finally end of my shifts, time to drink myself to blackout and smoke myself to cancer; it can't come fast enough!
Little vodka and OJ, breakfast of champions.

It depends on the person.
