So i'm going on a road trip with my friends in November and thinking what gear to pack…unfortunately I think I'll end up bringing the heaviest set up I can think of:

d600
nikon 24-70 2.8
nikon 70-200 2.8 vrII
tokina 11-16 (should i upgrade to FX version 16-28 just for this? idk, its bigger and heavier too :/)
Sirui carbon fiber tripod w/ heavy ass Induro BHD2 ballhead that weighs more than tripod itself
random accessories like batteries, cards, ND filter, etc.

I'm really tempted to leave the 70-200 at home due to weight. Pretty much everyone in misc photo crew told me to take it when I went hiking in Washington state (mt rainier, north cascades, exploring cities like leavenworth, seattle, etc) and I had absolutely 0 regrets with my decision to leave it at home for that trip. I shot 90% of it with my 24-70 and some 11-16 shots but even those I would've been fine being limited to 24mm. So now idk what to do :/ I know its a great lens but I only really use it when I shoot headshots or engagement sessions/weddings

this is our schedule:
also any tips on any of the below locations from a photographer's perspective would be great and I will rep generously!

My equipment is poverty level compared to what some of you guys have. Right now all I have is a Pentax K30 camera with a Pentax DA WR 18-135mm and a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Telephoto Zoom. Once I get a few more pictures I think I will start to upload on imgur.

I think with a backdrop like that, you would want to get it all in focus. Only thing I would offer is maybe bring the highlights down a bit on the top photo. It's my favorite but the blown highlights are drawing my eyes up.

Anywho… been away from the forums… thought I would toss a few up (been working on black and white a bit).

I was going through some of my old stuff and found this one, which I kind of liked.

Always a pleasure coming back to the thread and catching up on all the great work.

Just my 2 cents but with a beautiful backdrop like that shallow DOF would be a waste on wider shots.

The only issue I see is that the light from the flash appears to be on axis so it looks flat because it's not creating a shadow. That can make it appear like they were Photoshopped into the shot.

Also flash is daylight balanced and when the light is warm it can help to warm up your flash with a 1/4 or 1/2 cut of CTO or straw gel. Lighting wise the third shot is the most natural looking.

It can be a real challenge working in bright conditions when you're limited to a max sync of 1/250 or slower. A 580 EXII for example only puts out around 80 Ws at full power and once you add diffusion it doesn't go very far at ISO 100 and f/8 or smaller (and using an ND for a wider aperture obviously cuts flash power as well). High speed sync is a massive waste of resources.

The best thing you can do is get your light in as close as possible and up higher so it's creating more of an angle and diffuse it with a softbox or umbrella. This is where an assistant comes in handy. Another option is a stand with a boom.

interdasting. thanks for all the insights. it was quite the challenge as i had never really done this type of shoot before.

i suppose this is the limit of an on-camera speedlite setup? no wonder photogs bring all out the big guns (Einsteins and whatnot) with giant light modifiers.

unfortunately, we did not have the luxury of time to setup all that stuff in multiple locations.

Did a similar trip about a month ago, D7100 with 10-24mm, 50mm, and 70-300mm. Some light hiking tripod. I didn't use the 50mm much at all, used the wide 90% of the time, but was stoked to have the 70-300m when I came across a family of big horn sheep at Zion. Landscape and wildlife photography get me hard, but if you're into something else then maybe leaving the 200 behind would be fine, There were also a good amount of domesticated buffalo out in the fields during the drive through places.

Hit up Arches, Anteleope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Lake Powell, Buckskin Gulch, Zion, Bryce in 4 days. You camping or hotel? Looking for adventures or just tourist/pictures? I strongly reccomend Buckskin gulch over lake powell, but I didn't have a boat. Also for antelope canyon you can pay for the photography tour, and it's worth it over the $40 standard tour, they require a tripod and let you set up, give you priority over the peasants. I wish I would've gone all out and did the $200 tour for 5 hours that take you to canyons nearby other than antelope, they have no people and have very similar views, just lacking the darkness that antelope has. Also I would hit up Horseshoe bend in the AM beofre you get on the boat, as well as afterwards, the sun sets behind the bend, which can be tricky to get good photos of the bend while looking into the sun, a sunrise would be behind you, and I always prefer that type of set-up. Look up exact sunrise/set times for the area during the specific time you are going to be there, as well as moon cycles for dat night photography.

On camera flash looks fine when bounced off ceilings and walls and for some light fill but as a key light or for strong fill you really need to get it off camera so you've got an angle to work with.

You mentioned more powerful lights. They make it easy to add strong fill or even overpower the sun but the downside is you've got to lug around a battery pack. Multiple speedlights is a good compromise. You just need to get the light off camera, spread it out, and move it in as close as possible.

I'd keep it simple and get some radio triggers (Yongnuo are cheap and support TTL), a light stand, a bracket, and a portable softbox or shoot through umbrella to diffuse that small light source and make it more flattering. Only takes a couple of minutes to set up. Living where you do you've got some incredible landscapes as a backdrop for portraits like that so it's worth investing in if you're planning to do more of that work. Just my 2 cents.

Anyone have a tried-and-true method of sorting out AF microadjustment? I have the sneaking feeling that it's ever so slightly off and I'd like to go and check it out.

Here are some pics from the Blue Angels Air Show in SF this past weekend. They were taken with my 5D Mark III and old school 70-200 F/2.8L IS lens. This was the first time I was using AI Servo and the AF worked great with the default settings. The keeper rate in terms of focused shots was almost 100%. I only missed a few when I couldn't keep my camera aimed at the jets because they were moving so fast when they were close to me.

I didn't do much PP. I only cropped and sharpened a tiny bit using DPP 4.
