As far as the guys you listed, a lot of them are just guys you want to do well because you've emotionally invested yourself into them. I'm sorry, but Ellington and Patton aren't good. We've seen what they're capable of. It isn't much.
I'm emotionally invested in all of our draft picks doing well but to say they're not any good without a legit chance to answer that question isn't fair. This season will certainly answer whether they're bench players or if our offense was holding them back. Is Julian Edelman a bad player because for the first 5 years he didn't do chit? Plenty of other players suddenly turned into decent players after being invisible early in their careers for whatever reasons.

Rod Smith
Donald Driver
Wes Welker
Eric Moulds

Now maybe those guys aren't the best of the best but they broke out later in their careers after a slow start. Not sure how you can realistically judge any offensive skill players outside of RBs with our offense the last few seasons.

As for the Tomsula hire, not gonna lie I don't know what was up with it. I'm hoping there was a plan there to basically use him as a scapegoat and hope to strike lighting in a bottle type of situation. Obviously it looks awful now but we also don't know how much of that hire was on him and how much was the Yorks pushing for it.

I think we can all agree he's on incredibly thin ice now. But as a personnel guy I still think he does more good than bad but there needs to be major progress shown by the players he drafted this year.

First depth chart released

Obviously not the most official thing with several position starters listened as player x/player y/player z

Interesting to see Vance McDonald listed as #1 TE though, I would've figured Celek would get that distinction guess he's having a good camp. Would be nice to see him finally turn into a good player(get those hands right Vance!)

Obviously it's still early and preseason performance and continued play in camp will make things clearer as we move forward but still an interesting look at where guys are now.

That sucks about Kap's shoulder, shoulders rarely, if ever, "get better". One shot like the ones on Romo and it is all over.
There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and…It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

Obviously guys can succeed later in their career, but it's very rare. Blaming the offense they're on isn't a good excuse when Josh Gordon and DeAndre Hopkins have recently put up monster seasons with the Browns and Texans, respectively. Travis Benjamin made a name for himself last year on the Browns.

Regardless, my point is that you can't use those guys to validate Baalke's draft success. This guy has to be on thin ice at this point.

Lol at that offense. Hopefully Chip can work some magic. Good news is that our line could actually be pretty good.

Sure, top tier talent will always come to the surface and the two guys you listed are definitely a lot more talented than Patton or Ellington so the comparison isn't fair. Not to mention Gordon exploded for his best season with Norv Turner as his OC. He may be a sucky HC but as an OC the guy is as legit as you get.

Hopkins got more targets last year(192) than Patton and Ellington have in their careers combined(70+31)….hell he nearly doubled their career totals in one season and he's had Bill O'Brien as a coach who has the same system as the Pats which we know works very well when you get the right guys in it.

Travis Benjamin certainly breaks that mold as the Browns had mediocre coaching last year on offense but he also did nothing of real worth til his 4th season and last year he also had more targets than Patton & Ellington combined, 125 vs 101.

That's why i'm glad we didn't re-sign Boldin. We need to see what we have or we don't have.

Sounds like the QBs weren't very impressive in today's practice. Certainly nobody running away with it but so far it doesn't sound like Chip Kelly will have a magic formula to turn one of those guys into a star.

Hopefully they show something vs Houston and it turns out our defense was a big part of why they're stinking it up.

Starting to feel like we might be lucky to win 6 games. This offense is seriously lacking talent.

Very possible. QB situation is a major question mark, WRs are a big question mark and ton of youth on the team plus a brutal schedule.

I'm honestly ok with us having a bad season record wise as long as our young players look good and improve as the season goes on and we're losing hard fought games rather than getting blown out and totally outplayed and outcoached like we were last year.

I honestly don't think the offense could do worse than last year though. That was just horrendous.

I think we have a really tough schedule too. You never really know how each team will pan out but on paper it looks rough.

I'm just glad the OL will be improved and I think behind that and a Hyde, Draughn backfield we could be alright. At least our current coach knows offense.

There are 2 reasons I think we'll win 6 games… or less.

1) Our WR's look like trash and Vance McDonald is the starting TE. That guy SUCKS and absolutely should not be the starter

2) We have a stud running back who is injury prone and behind him is… Shaun fukking Droughn.

This tells me we don't have talent on the outside to keep the pressure off the inside and we don't have an adequate backup for the almost guaranteed injury that comes from having 8 men in the box at all times.

I'm revising my guess… I think we win 4 games.

Cohn is trying to say Kap's shoulder is fuked.

First the mention of him getting it worked on Tuesday. Then him being all over the place on throws yesterday and the "rest day" today.

Hopefully that's not the case. I may not have much faith in the guy but I'd like to see a legit competition and not see him lose due to injury.

I just read about that too. I am not sure what to believe. He does throw the ball hard. We have not heard of any issues until now. Maybe he is just getting used to throwing again after his break, he is sore, or maybe there is an issue.

Gabbert is going to win this job, and I'm sort of excited about it. I definitely don't think this is even close to a playoff team, but like stated, I am ready to see some young talent. Defense is interesting.

Wish we could have gotten a 2nd for Kaep…or even a high 3rd.

He got me excited early…sounded like he was working the Texans(granted without Watt and Clowney) with 2 TDs….but apparently sucked in 11 on 11s later on.

Thank god we have a game today. Not sure what I am going to watch the most. We are really deep in the secondary and I am curious how the dline and oline will look. Then we have kap and gabbert… It is preseason so they will not be playing against started the whole time. Still it will be nice to see how Kelly's offense looks now.

don't think i'll be able to watch live as I have a thing with family tonight but definitely got it DVR'd and will watch when I get back.

Guys i'm most excited to watch tonight in no particular order

Arik Armstead - not sure if he plays but love to see the improvement from last year
DeForest Buckner - the second tower
Bruce Ellington - like you guys didn't know
Jeff Driskel - Tom Brady 2.0…i'd settle for Tom Brady /2.0
Rory Anderson - doubt he makes the team but I'd love to see it happen
Brandon Thomas - last chance to prove himself imo
The young secondary - still a lot of unknowns, most curious to see the rookies but Acker, Johnson and Reaser have to prove themselves again.
Chip Kelly - let's see that offense baby!

Unfortunately Gabbert has played himself back into a competition…Jesus, not sure if it's nerves in a preseason game lol, rust, bust simple throws way off.

Man…not trolling as I know you guys still hang your heart on Kaep but I hate the idea of him working back in the damn lineup. He is what he is…which is a step above a solid back-up but entitlement of Brady.

I did hear today Maiocco say he has changed his tune dramatically…but same was said last year.

Pretty much. The only thing I hang on with KaP is his ability to run. Sure gabbert has show he can break open if there is the opportunity but he is nothing like kap.

Let just get it settles and start building around whoever wins
