And that's 600mm? Kind of makes me sad that Andromeda only fills up that much of the frame with that reach. Looks like your tracker tracks well too.

Some day I'll finally pull the trigger on a tracker and that 150-600.

although you'd get more detail for sure, above 600mm would be pretty hard to frame. i had to do many test exposures to get it centered.

30-40 second was the most i could get on the tracker with that weight before i saw star trailing. i will have to find a way to hook up a 50mm viewscope and do an autoguiding system so i can get longer exposure without shaky stars.

800mmm would probably be perfect for the andromeda. other objections like orion neb, pleaides, need at least 1200mm-2000mm for good detail.

i did a couple objects with my 7dmkii attached to an an actual scope. it turned out well, but i havent stacked them yet.

I think an additional point to mention would be that because of the very short flange distance from being mirrorless - you can use basically any adapter to any other lens without much trouble. Know a few blokes on island that are Sony a7+Canon L-Lens users.

So via slickdeals, I was able to buy a refurbished Canon 70D w/18-135mm lens for $677.

Hopefully they don't cancel everyone's orders…

Just my 2 cents but shadows make photos interesting. Take them away and you generally have a boring, flat image.

It's often what you don't see that makes an image interesting and creates drama. Sure some people will see shadows and think "it's too dark, I want to see more detail there." Well you don't always have to give people what they want.

Here's a location near me. The first shot is close to what you would get shooting on slide film with a latitude of around 4-5 stops. The second shot is HDR. I prefer the first shot.

Did some studying and decided to make a change to the way I light outdoor portraits. Use to pull them back to give the subject even coverage, now I move them in much closer and light them more like a studio portrait. Digging the results.

Also, been putting more emphasis in posing. I kinda always thought my technical ability would carry me. Finally got it through my thick skull that no matter how good I compose, light and edit, a boring subject is a boring subject.

I know I still have a ways to go, but just happy because this is the 1st time in about 6 months i see a noticeable improvement in my work.

Would appreciate any follows! https://500px.com/bluesasquatch

Some of my favorites from Zion National Park, as always criticism is welcome, I think the watermark may be a tad large? I tried to upload a scanned signature and all that, kept crashing lightroom.

Just a random shot, so much to see and take in, didn't really plan a ton of shots, I struggle between taking photographs that I would want to "publish" verses photographs to just share with family. Both is ideal but sometimes it doesn't work out.

Like the photo composition here.

Hope they've fixed all the bugs. I had one of the first copies back when it was released and hated it because it wouldn't focus. Went through two different versions + a trip to the Sigma factory for calibration and nothing worked. I've probably told this story 5 times in the past two or three Misc Photog threads, lol, figured I'd throw another one in here.

Anyway, it was a solid lens when it wanted to focus. F1.8 was insanely sharp. Build quality was top notch too.

Ah OK. I've only read good things about it so I'd thought I'd give it a go. Bought it for a good price I think. Very keen to take some shots!!

When you come to think of it, almost all human behaviour and activity is not essentially any different from animal behaviour. The most advanced technologies and craftsmanship bring us, at best, up to the super-chimpanzee level. Actually, the gap between, say, Plato or Nietzsche and the average human is greater than the gap between that chimpanzee and the average human.

Which card is better to set the white balance, the Whibal or a traditional 18% gray card? The Whibal doesn't seem like it's 18% gray.

It's not. It's around a stop lighter (75 luminance in Lab color space) than a traditional gray card and by reflecting more light provides a more accurate target for white balance. It was not designed to be an exposure tool.

There is a lot of confusion about "middle gray" and it's worth mentioning 18% is not what your camera's built-in meter is calibrated to. The same goes for handheld meters from Sekonic, etc. The original instructions for Kodak gray cards suggested opening up 1/2 a stop.

Getting back to the WhiBal, it's definitely worth keeping in your bag for situations where you need accurate color. Hold it in the same light as your subject, angle it to avoid glare, and put the WB dropper on it in RAW. Beats clicking around trying to find something neutral.

I ordered both from Amazon because the 18% gray was not that expensive. I'm looking forward to try them out. I'm getting annoyed with eye dropper tool.

18% gray card is useful for exposure. Hold it in the light of your subject, spot meter it, open up 1/3 to 1/2 a stop, and you'll get an identical reading to a handheld meter.

In other news I finally pulled the trigger on some Yongnuo TTL radio triggers. B&H finally stocking them sealed the deal for me.

I held out for years using Cybersync manual flash triggers with a Sekonic flash meter and a Nikon SU-800 indoors. It all works but having to walk over to your lights to adjust the power without an assistant is a PITA, especially when you're shooting from further away with a longer lens. With remote control over radio you never have to leave your spot. Adjust the power from the controller and take another shot. I can already do this indoors with Nikon's system but in 2015 using infrared feels wrong.

So I started looking for alternatives. PocketWizard's system with that AC3 zone controller thing never looked right to me and Radiopopper's Jr2 transmitter doesn't support TTL. Even though remote manual control of speedlights over radio is all I really need it's nice to have TTL flash control for certain situations.

Essentially I wanted a radio version of the Nikon SU-800 but not as bulky. Phottix came out with the Odin. Looked good but was $200 for the controller and $550 for 4 receivers. Not exactly cheap for stuff coming out of China.

Yongnuo then released an LCD version of their controller for less than a quarter of the cost of the Phottix one. It was just what I wanted but I didn't want to be a beta tester. Seeing them for sale on B&H convinced me.

Total cost for controller + 4 receivers: $200.
