In other news I finally pulled the trigger on some Yongnuo TTL radio triggers. B&H finally stocking them sealed the deal for me.

I held out for years using Cybersync manual flash triggers with a Sekonic flash meter and a Nikon SU-800 indoors. It all works but having to walk over to your lights to adjust the power without an assistant is a PITA, especially when you're shooting from further away with a longer lens. With remote control over radio you never have to leave your spot. Adjust the power from the controller and take another shot. I can already do this indoors with Nikon's system but in 2015 using infrared feels wrong.

So I started looking for alternatives. PocketWizard's system with that AC3 zone controller thing never looked right to me and Radiopopper's Jr2 transmitter doesn't support TTL. Even though remote manual control of speedlights over radio is all I really need it's nice to have TTL flash control for certain situations.

Essentially I wanted a radio version of the Nikon SU-800 but not as bulky. Phottix came out with the Odin. Looked good but was $200 for the controller and $550 for 4 receivers. Not exactly cheap for stuff coming out of China.

Yongnuo then released an LCD version of their controller for less than a quarter of the cost of the Phottix one. It was just what I wanted but I didn't want to be a beta tester. Seeing them for sale on B&H convinced me.

Total cost for controller + 4 receivers: $200.

I received both Whibal and 18% gray card. The images that used the Whibal card to set the WB appears to be slightly more natural looking. Using the traditional 18% grey card to set WB gave images a very slight blue tint, which I wouldn't have noticed if didn't have a Whibal card to compare to. Using either of these cards, results were tremendously better than clicking the eye dropper all over the image to find the best WB. I even went back to images I shot before in the same lighting and use the Whibal card image to fix the WB.

I'm going to play around with the 18% grey card to set exposure when I get home later.

Thanks brah. Been putting a lot of work into learning to build poses lately so it's great to hear you point them out as strong points in the photos.

For sure. Even nitpicking, I couldn't find much I'd change. Check out this video. This guy helped me the most with what to look for and all the intricacies of posing. He's really thorough.

Also, any of you guys familiar with the technicolor film color process? Been fascinated with that sh*t lately. Been really trying to nail that look and the colors. Weird.

What's the lighting setup there? I'm guessing large softbox or beauty dish?

I use 4 of the 622c's with the 622-tx. I love them, they kill it at weddings…I have an alien bee B1600 with 3 yongnuo speedlights as kickers for receptions and it works amazing. Only complaint is so far I have not been able to nail high speed sync with the B1600 because of its short flash time (which many triggers struggle with). I know with pocket wizards and cybersyncs you can do it but I don't want to buy anything else lol. I've also read that with the manual time adjustment on the 622-TX you're supposed to be able to get it to work with the short burst time but I haven't had luck yet.

Was asked in photography class to recreate a old painting into a photograph. This is what I came up with using a profoto 1200 acute pack into a photek softlighter top camera right and a profoto head in a octabank for fill behind me.

There is a person in my area that keeps marketing themselves as an "Award Winning Photographer". I decided to check out their site and their portfolio was pretty damn sub-par (and I'm being generous).

Checked out their "Awards" and they were from viewbug. You upload your photo and it goes into something that looks like a flickr group queue and other users and give you an "Award" as a like. They are literally calling themselves an Award winning photographer based on the equivalent of a ******** like.

I find it very misleading and quite unethical.

Solid testimonial M. I held out for years waiting for a decent Nikon radio TTL system and right now nothing else touches it for the price. I also like the way the controller sits flat unlike the Phottix Odin.

Yongnuo selling controllers/receivers for $40 and Canon now having their own radio system has completely tor****ed PocketWizard. They were happy to charge top dollar for a long time without addressing the shortcomings of their system which opened the door to these Chinese companies. While there's still room in the market for higher build quality when you can buy these things for $40 it's just too easy to justify having a few spares in your bag in the event they fail on a job.

re: 'hypersync' I did a write up in here a while back on doing it with Cybersync triggers. With multiple speedlights on full power (the only way you get a long enough flash duration to make it work) I can easily get more power than Auto FP/HSS. I rarely look to overpower the sun in the middle of the day because I don't like that look — I just want to slightly underexpose the ******t and fill in the shadows. I can do that with speedlights without having to worry about heavy battery packs. I must admit I am tempted to get a pair of Profoto B1s however I'm leaning toward a couple of Godox Witstros — over 700 Ws with a very light battery pack that both recycles and charges quickly. They've just become available with TTL support for Nikon.

I've always been big on manual flash for its consistency but there are a lot of situations where I've come to see it's not practical. When you're doing a shoot on your terms it's fine to take your time dialing things in and going back and forth with a light meter but I recently had a Joe McNally moment and saw the light with TTL. I have a little trick up my sleeve for nailing perfect TTL exposures every time. Will share it when I get around to writing a blog post. In summary TTL flash is amazing stuff when you know how to use it properly. For a long time I didn't bother because I used dumb radio triggers.

Another batch of favorite photos from the Utah/Nevada Trip

Buckskin Gulch is a 12 mile continuous slot canyon, one of the top 10 most deadly hikes in America, due to how screwed you are if a flash flood occurs. If you heard about the flash flooding in Utah that killed all those people, we were in this Canyon about 24 hours prior, and the canyon did flood, however no one was in it at the time, the deaths were a nearby town and at Zion national park. We only made it maybe 3 or 4 miles in before turning back due to what we had heard for the day on weather, also my brother is a 300+ lb software engineer who can't haul ass, so eliminates the ability to move quickly. Anyways 10/10 hike wood plow.

Navajo markings.

One of the many images from Antelope Canyon, more popular and famous, the ray of light shots are pretty cool, but they jam about 200 people in the canyon, so it's to crowded and far from relaxing, despite how the picture turned out. As stated before, if you go here, pay more for the photography tour, ideally pay the max amount and have them take you to other canyons where it is just you and maybe 4 other people, much more relaxed, and enjoyable.

Pretty good man, the B&W with elephants works out, they are just shades of grey as is, and it helps to enhance the wrinkles I think. Also not sure if it was on purpose, but when I shoot at zoos I try my best to keep man-made items out of the shot. Not trying to fool anyone into thinking it's in the wild, but no need for large concrete structures in it either. What zoo was this?

Pittsburgh zoo. You are right about trying to keep man made objects out, unfortunately the Pittsburgh zoo is not set up well at all so that is hard to do.

LOL, thanks man. I mostly shoot for aspiring models looking for portfolio work which helps me boost my portfolio. I don't really make **** off of it, but I really enjoy it and have access to some pretty talented girls whenever I feel like shooting. It leads me to getting senior portrait bookings, LOL.

these were taken with 7dmk2 and an 8" celestron telescope. tried using the 6D, but there was way too much vignette because of the focal reducer (turns telescope from 2000mm f10 to 1200mm f6.3)

When you come to think of it, almost all human behaviour and activity is not essentially any different from animal behaviour. The most advanced technologies and craftsmanship bring us, at best, up to the super-chimpanzee level. Actually, the gap between, say, Plato or Nietzsche and the average human is greater than the gap between that chimpanzee and the average human.
