I think that at this point this is probably the best option for a new buyer out there at $899:https://grabagun.com/springfield-arm...6-16-30-1.html

It's more expensive than the Ruger, but is going to have similar features. It will also come with a set of metal, adjustable flip sights (probably $100).

Really just goes to show that the time to buy an AR was anytime in the last 3.5 years before mid-March.

Recently purchased a handgun and loving it. Wanting to venture into AR territory soon. I've been hearing mixed opinions about building an AR vs buying a "pre-built" AR for a first timer. Any thoughts on this?

I built mine. It is nice and I was able to save $200 compared to a similarly built systems at the cost of no warranty and having to buy from half a dozen different stores.

If I was doing it again I would either:

Buy something like the OP or buy a PSA complete upper and lower in the configuration I want and put them together.

If you are buying anytime soon you take what you can get.

Dealer I spoke with over the weekend said that the latest Rugers are being manufactured poorly compared to the past. He pulled out a couple to show me how many metal burs and sharp edges there were on just the ones he had in stock.

OP as someone in fruits and nuts California the people around me don't understand the need for assault rifles at all. Could you please offer me your side? I'm just curious when my friends and family complain about them and say that the second amendment was not made with assault rifles in mind.

Do the people around you understand the need for a gun at all? If they can't get behind the idea of self protection, hunting, or marksmanship then you aren't going to convince them. Beyond that, nobody is getting an assault rifle, as those are military weapons with which you can change between semi-automatic and automatic. The AR-15 is a design of rifle with the ability to swap parts with other AR-15 designed guns. They also have a system that uses the explosion that propels the bullet to also eject the spent casing and load the next round, lessoning the impact against your should so that even somebody weak or frail can defend their life. That's about it!

They call them "assault weapons" because they are idiots and don't understand guns or gun crime. Thinking a gun becomes more dangerous because it has a pistol grip or because it has a tip on the end that makes the explosion coming out less blinding doesn't even make sense, and yet those things were enough to outlaw guns that aren't any different than other guns on the market. They shoot the same rounds as other guns that aren't "assault weapons" at the same rate of fire. So unless you are in favor of banning all guns, then I don't see much of a reason for a rational person to want to ban these by themselves. It is pure fear mongering.

This is a very very simple argument to win.

First, ask them to read any 20th century history book and then after they are done ask them, do you think human nature has changed at all in 100 years?

If the answer is NO, then you just won the argument.

They don't believe in banning all guns (well, not all of them), but I think they have the vision of Rambo with an assault rifle and wonder why the regular citizen needs such a weapon.

What do you mean human nature?

Our "society" has definitely changed over the past 100 years. Columbine marked the beginning of school shootings.

I personally didn't grow up with guns as my grandfather watched people get shot and killed in Chicago and was against them, so my Dad was never around them. And most people in the Bay Area don't have them. There are exceptions in the extremely wealthy, conservative areas around me.

So yes I am not trying to sit in my bubble in California and say that we should ban all guns, I'm just trying to understand the other side.

Ask them to find out how many people are killed each year by an AR15. Now do handguns.

AR15 is the boogie man, after you successfully take it away, all guns will eventually be on the table. Moving goal post is standard operating procedures for progressives.
Freedom of speech is a principle pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved and tyranny is erected on its ruins.

I should’ve listened back then, which was $10k ago…

Anyone that sees this that still doesn’t own a gun needs to get their crap together and buy one, preferably an AR15

Societies change and will continue to change, but human nature has remained unchanged since men started walking erect.

Think about it, it's better when you figure it out on your own.

Help me understand the 'other side'

What restrictions on the Rights/Liberties does the other side support that you think might possibly make sense, and why?

I'm looking to get an AR soon. I've looked at the websites for the stores around me, but lately I've been branching off into other sites, like gun.deals, which looks to be a conglomeration of gun deals. If I'm buying X sku of X manufacturer, does it really matter where I'm getting it from? It isn't like I can pay all this money and get everything set up with a local FFL dealer and then they ship me some other gun or don't send it, right? Or is it recommended to stick with some site more well-known?

General rules of who to buy from still apply in that they could take forever to ship or could potentially ship the wrong thing, but, if you do just a little due diligence you should be fine. If you haven't heard of the seller, search for their name on gun forums/reddit/etc to see a little real feedback (posts by established accounts, etc) and then send it

Or just ask in this thread

seconding what Farley said. There are, like for anything else, shadey vendors and sketchy websites.
I've had gun parts never arrive and the vendor tell me to fist myself. Was able to chargeback since I'd used a CC. With a little research beforehand I'd have known they were a ****ty vendor.
gun.deals is good for finding stuff. I use r/gundeals (only reason I made a reddit acct) and the members are good for knowing if it's actually a deal and if vendor is gtg.
