Np. And even if you decide to get a more "hard to get" piece in the future and don't want to pay a 40% or more markup, you can at least walk in with an OP already on your wrist.

Spoke with a rep at DavidSW. I noticed they have a brand new model ($5,975) as well as 2 used ones priced at $5,375 (Feb 2018 warranty) and at $5,075 (Jan 2017 warranty). "The one that is $5075 is a 2017 model, in excellent condition , it may have a few hairlines on the buckle but the case and sapphire is in excellent shape."

(Q) What are your thoughts on going brand new or used? I'm leaning toward brand new but the $600-$1,000 savings is enticing.

***One key thing they noted is that they will begin charging tax "within the next week or so." This is huge, given that I'm in NYC. So 5,975 * 8.875% = $530 in taxes. So in short, I should make a decision soon if I want to save an extra $500.***

Damn. The tax thing is going to limit their value, somewhat, in situations such as yours. It also may be a sales tactic on their end.

Personally, like the idea of getting something that hasn't had someone elses dikk beaters on it and that all the scratches and scuffs are "mine." Although i will say, considering how long i haven't had mine and i wear it almost daily, youre going to put your own scuffs on it in no time. And if it really doesn't have any, it was barely worn.

I just got back from an AD in NYC (Tourneau). Unfortunately, they didn't have ANY OP 39s in stock of any colorway, but the sales associate had me try on a similar 40mm Rolex watch just to get the feel. He also said it would take "a few months" to get the OP 39 in Rhodium if I wanted it. Haha I see what you guys mean now by the "experience" of going to an AD. Very over the top friendliness (gave me a nice Rolex hardcover book to take home, offered me champagne, etc.).

Just running the numbers, AD –> 5700 retail * 1.08875 = ~$6200 TOTAL versus DavidSW –> 5975 + 0 taxes + 50 s/h = 6025. So roughly 175 dollar difference which is kind of negligible in the grand scheme of things.

Hmm…

But with the AD you have to wait. Now that you got the AD experience and champagne and book, go buy from David lol.

This. I wouldn't wait months for the OP. Also don't be afraid to visit everywhere in the area and get the same experience. LOL.

And who knows, maybe you'll get lucky and one will call back in a week.

If not, be nice and say "Im good, i was able to find elsewhere but i will keep you in mind for future purchases."

Ah that's true. I guess I felt somewhat influenced by the psychological aspect of it and felt bad for not giving them my business (since I assume they earn a commission).

That being said, I am going to check out the official Rolex store on 5th Avenue tomorrow. Thanks again guys.

I guess that's the one benefit of rolex being tight fisted with their pieces. I'm always to ashamed to accept the drinks n chit when I know i'm going into a dealer just to try on pieces and not willing to buy. With rolex and AP you're likely not able to buy what you went in for anyway. I walked into a dedicated Glashutte boutique once to try on the Panomatic Lunar and the SA was damn near foaming at the mouth

I tell them upfront that I'm not there to buy anything and it's always been fine. They're usually bored anyway and don't mind helping you out or talking watches if they're into that. And if they can get their business card into your hand maybe you'll come back one day.

Love my quartz Bathys and Shinola, I swap as desired, no windy windy necessary, 0 time adjustments. Yass.

I want a Muhle Glashuette SAR, though, anyone ever try one?

Been looking for a cheap every day watch with a tan/light leather strap. I have a Tissot Tradition Chronograph that looks great for business casual, but the strap is a dark leather and it clashes when I wear light leather belt and shoes.

The Tissot:
Spoiler!

Anyway I only wanted to spend a few hundred bucks but wasn't finding anything I really wanted (looking at Citizen & Seiko mainly). I came across and picked up the Timex 40th anniversary easy reader with the forest green dial for $70 bucks on Ebay and honestly am very impressed for the price. I read some reviews that said people would probably pay $70 for the leather strap alone and I can see why. I assume it has little horological value, and have already noticed it ticks rather loudly compared to my other swiss movement watches.

The Timex:
Spoiler!

Time to get a larger box! Although probably going to get rid of the Fossil and the Yazole. The former I never wear cause it's massive and the Tissot replaced it, and the latter is a garbage beater watch I got for $5 with a dead battery. Still haven't graduated to any big boy watches yet, but we'll get there.

For fuks sake, if you have a battery powered watch and like it then be proud of it and own it.

Bragging about it not needing servicing, or needing to be wound is like entering a car enthusiast thread and bragging that your Prius gets better gas mileage and requires no pesky stick shifting like those cumbersome Aston Martin Vantages.

Was thinking the same thing. Don't really care that your prius is easier to drive and gets better gas mileage than my C5 that puts mid 500s to the ground naturally asperated.

Had the Air King for about a month and a half now, it's still basically set where the dealer put it when i look at my phone. And if it doesn't need service in 10 years…im not going to get the thing taken apart for shi+s and giggles.

Fair point.

Maybe it's a personal decision, but I have a hard time paying $700+ for a Victorinox or Luminox quartz when a $70 Swatch or Timex quartz is essentially the same thing. I don't personally see the value there, but that's just me.

On another personal note - I got my oldest daughter a Timex weekender for christmas on a stock light blue nato strap. She already has a list going of new straps she wants for it

I can definitely see it with the more expensive quartz watches. Not sure why you'd buy one.

For me it's really the cool factor that the watch works on nothing other than my input to it and that's all it needs. To me, it's a cool little mechanical wonder. Sure, in a month it may, i stress may, be off by a minute. Oh no.

And start her off right with the natos!

Didn't know what that was off the top of my head so I googled it. That's a pretty sweet dial, it's got Nomos vibes.

Yeah she's pretty pumped, she's only 10 and already has the watch bug.

This is the one we got her. She really loves the Indiglo feature too. The fact that she can switch out bands on her own is also a win.

I'm going to answer this, filtering out as much watch-snobbery as possible and just give you the facts. If you're entertaining Shinola, you're likely entertaining the watch as a fashionable accessory. No problem with that.

- Shinola uses a lot of quartz (battery powered) setups. I don't think quartz watches are worth a penny over $350 and Shinola seems to be charging $500.

- They also provide mechanical/automatic watches, they use Sellita movements. Which are lower tier movements, and they charge $1,000+ for those watches.

- If you're looking for a fashionable minimalistic watch they'll do I suppose but if I were you I'd exhaust the women's options offered by Seiko, Tissot, and Longines long before I would entertain anything from Shinola. However, I do understand that Shinola (ironically) has more clout than seiko and tissot to millennials who don't know anything about watches.

I currently have a Tissot! I haven't really looked into Longines, but I'll do that right now. Thanks for not BSing me. I was looking at a crossbody bag by Shinola (they have a store in my city) and the rep was feeding me what I wanted. Reps.

Shinola vs. MVMT in a winner-take-all millenial cage match.

Considering how much shinola charges….and what you *don't* get for it…theres much better value to be had out there.

Hell, my standard, automatic, field watch from Hamilton that i beat the piss out of at the gym was only $350.

Anyone heard of JBW? I think they are located in Texas.

I have 4 watches coming in, but the JBW diamond ones look real tempting to get.

I have 4 watches coming in, but the JBW diamond ones look real tempting to get.

Unfortunately did not come with original bracelet so I had to stick a cheap straight end oyster I had laying around.
Not even mad brah. Not a bad flieger type style. The bracelet you have for it looks too thin for the case though. I think it'd look considerably better with a bracelet that doesn't taper so thin OR a beefy black leather strap would do it some justice

If you buy from someone like David, measure your wrist and he'll size it for you (string around wrist and the measure the length of string). If it's not right, take it to an AD with a watchmaker on staff and have him size it for you. They usually do it for free but if they charge you it won't be much. I do it myself and that's another option.

Talk to David and talk to your AD and see how you feel.

No luck brahs. Went to 4 different ADs in NYC and none of them had ANY OP 39s in any colorways in stock. All of them kept saying they're sold out from Christmas and it would take 8-12 weeks to order. I'm probably just going to purchase from David but would've loved to at least had the opportunity to try one on before buying. Thanks again and I'll keep you guys updated.

Seems weird that they didn't even have any OPs. Give it a week, you may magically get a call. If not, just buy.
