maybe I'm wrong but I look at it this way…..there was one cut on the first board and it took 10 minutes.
cutting the board into 3 pieces is 2 cuts…..if the first one took ten minutes, so would the second cut……equaling 20 minutes total

the math problem is so horribly worded. the student was right in thinking 1 cut = 10 mins, 2 cuts = 20 mins, and the teacher saw it as 10 mins for 2 pieces = 5 mins per piece. 3 pieces makes it 15 mins.

depends on where the cut goes and what the board looks like. i think what they were trying to impart from the teachers answer is that the board would be halved each time and as such the time to complete additional cuts would take half the time.

so square board. cut in half. 10 mins. then cut one of the halves in half in 5 if you cut perpendicular. blah blah blah

speaking of poorly worded…

it was written for children. what do they know about power tools? if taken from a math on perspective, the teacher solved for minutes per piece when the kid solved for minutes per cut.

Yep, ANOTHER was the key word. If the question was to saw into 3 pieces total…it took 10 minutes to make one cut (make 2 pieces), so it would take another 10 minutes to cut one of those halves in half, creating 3 total pieces.

Teacher is correct, although it's a crappy question, worded strangely.
