It's your total calorie expenditure minus calories. Period. The leanest physique athletes only walk for cardio, and in fact, intense cardio can cannibalize muscle when you're very lean. Everything else is just noise. People overcomplicate things because they wanna seem like there's some special knowledge and fat people wanna think there's a special thing you need to learn to lose weight because the simplest explanation that they eat too much robs them of an excuse
the leanest people i knew always ran or cycled or sports. i guess over time they were always in a deficit because they were active most of the week
and the big dogs on stage who compete have hormones elevated via injection that tell the body to burn fat, so walking is enough for them

I'm not saying that being active doesn't help you lose weight or create a caloric deficit. I'm just saying it's not necessary. Although for a bovice who is not particularly savvy with their calories and macronutrients, I would suggest cardio, because it helps to get that deficit even with mistakes in your dieting.

Myself, i am experienced and have my caloric intake. And caloric expenditure dialed in. I'm not playing a guessing game. I do get what you're saying though, i'm not trying to be argumentative.I just that people get caught up and skipp the basics, which comes down to a sustained caloric deficit
