Crime is pretty low outside of the obviously dangerous, poor areas. It's been lowering relatively well.

it starts with the family and the community. the saying "it takes a village to raise a child" holds true. back when I was growing up, everyone had your back. if you screwed up/did something stupid, parents, uncles/aunts, and neighbors whooped your ass. if you needed something, you could always ask your neighbors for help. nowadays, people mind their own business and don't even know their neighbors....

additionally, more parent involvement is needed. parents nowadays are not involved with their children since they are too busy trying to earn a living. parents and children need to be accountable. too many parents try to put the blame on someone else when it's their child who was in the wrong

lastly, more family planning. if a person can barely provide for themselves, why are they making babies? this goes back to accountability.... kids need to prioritize their education and livelihood vice the yolo lifestyle, party and sex.

You have soldiers coming home diagnosed with PTSD from seeing a buddy being killed or being around that type of violence.

95% of the kids I grew up with saw at least one of our friends beiing killed, we all have seen dead bodies, all seen people get shot stabbed. We all probably have/had some sort of PTSD. Add that to a broken home, violence,drugs, low self-worth because we didn't think we were **** but project kids. It's not a surprise that there's a mental health issue in those communities.

In a realistic way, what would be the most effective meansof breaking the cycle? More access to birth control, access to after-school programs, more mental health awareness? I feel like even though we had all of these resources growing up there was still a lot of kids who were in to drugs and crime. Albeit, probably less than somewhere without access to those types of things.

This. Crime, especially murder is at a low and has been dropping for a long time.


We do need to overhaul our prison system. It tends to turn petty criminals into hard core criminals and make it harder for someone to turn their life around. It is hard to get a legit job if you have a felony on your record. So hard that some just say F' it and go back to crime, feel hopeless. Everyone needs incentive, and to give someone who's been on the wrong side a greater incentive to go to the right side would help out tremendously. Also, stop it at the source. Make parents accountable for the actions of their kids. Jr goes out and steals or vandalizes, mom and dad get to spend time in jail while he's in YDC, because they are responsible for him. If they can't handle Jr, they need to release him to the state.

Statistically, right now is one of the safest times to ever be an American. Almost all violent crime has been on downward trends.

But, for the sake of argument, get rid of archaic mandatory minimum and tough-on-crime sentences involving drugs. The "revolving door" approach doesn't work to stop crime when you're having people constantly coming in and out of jails over small-time possession and petty sales charges. For some reason people think treating a prison as if its a rehab for drug users can work but it doesn't. All it does is result in overcrowded prisons and too many people with criminal records. It's stupid and ineffective.

Not hating on blacks, I think if they take responsibility for their actions, they can be successful in life and avoid crime. The whole country treating them like victims who can't do anything to improve their situation doesn't help anyone in reality.
