There's far too many people who cannot get out of the way of their own ego. What do I mean by this?

If you're walking into the gym and going right to the exercise you can move the most weight on and you're actually conscious of how other people in the gym perceive your strength then you're doing yourself a disservice.

Lets take a chest day for example. The majority of gym-goers are going to walk into the gym and attempt to move around some 'heavy' weight on barbell or dumbbells and continue to move up in weight beyond what they can really control, squeeze, and concentrate on a mind-muscle connection. At this point you're no longer maximizing the recruitment of your chest and you're letting other muscle groups, momentum, or other structures play a larger role.

I get a good chuckle out of the guys who walk in with their ILS sit on a flat bench and then bounce 315 off their chest or half rep it yet still have a bird chest and noodle arms. Don't let that be you.

I don't even bother with barbell or dumbbells 90% of the time - machines, cables, or smith with good volume and intensity techniques = mind blowing chest workouts for example.

All these miscers who bitch and moan about what is/isn't possible naturally and have become self deprecating about their own progress are likely those I'm referring to with this post.
This is why I could never be a bodybuilder. I'd stop lifting if I had to use machines and cables all the time. Boring as fuark. The few times I've tried focusing on bodybuilding splits, I got discouraged and burnt out within two weeks.

So you're okay doing movements without even feeling what muscle(s) are being targeted just as long as the weight is moving up and down? Don't take the term 'mind muscle connection' so literally just to make some bs point.

I'm not saying you have to ONLY use cables and machines but for bodybuilding there's really nothing to say you MUST use barbell and dumbbells to get top notch results.

I agree having fun in the gym is 100% essential to achieving results and staying consistent.

OP speaks the truth. I was putting up some decent numbers and add weight to the bar each week. My ego loved benching and 365 for everyone to be mirin. But I wasn't getting any bigger. Then i hurt my wrist and had to drop weight almost all me exercises. I haven't even put 315 on the bar in a long time. Im bigger now and strong just from dropping weight and concentration. Concentrating on using only the target muscle (at least as much as possible) has done more for my size than anything. Time under tension boyo

I swear some of you miscers can't read. OP isn't saying to use light weight, and just use machines.

He is just making the point to stop fukkin ego lifting. You get nothing out of going into the gym and heaving up 225 for 4-5 half assed reps that bounce off your chest, followed by doing body-heaving cable crossovers.

This is hard to say because they're all very different but I'll use my last chest workout as an example if you're actually curious.

Excluding warm up sets

Smith Machine Incline
4 sets 10 reps
1 set 3 partial reps (from chest to half way up) - > 1 full rep repeated 3x
Drop set for 20 reps
Short rest -> 5 pause reps

Flat Hammer Strength Machine Press
4 sets 10-16 reps (don't actually count and rest kept short)
1 set iso-lateral alternating left right (scheme is 3 reps done on left, right held under tension, 3 reps done on right, left held under tension and repeat til near failure)

High Cable Flies
4-5 sets short rest between sets and reps between 10-16
Used varying angles on the high cable flies

Dip machine superset with Overhead Cable Pullover (similar motion to lying DB pullover)
3 sets on each, no rest between sets, reps 10+

that hypertrophy pump chit doesn't work unless

B) You're "supplementing"

ironic that it's your ego that's the determining factor when training for pump
Scientifically this information is false. All muscle fibers despite their typology will experience hypertrophy so long as time under load is adequate to stimulate sufficient rate coding.

You wont get stronger from doing 10 Rep Sets of Smith Incline Press, FACT. Heavy dumbbells / barbells are required to get stronger (even if the form isnt 100% on point)

I honestly would discourage you from doing it unless those exercises truly all work great for you and you're certain it would blast your chest.

I've never had good lifts by strictly following someone else's routine, it's always a healthy mix of the the things I've learned over the years work best for me and then creating variance within those bounds.

Do you think you are pretty much at the natty limit?

I am not far behind your physique and feel my gains have slowed down to almost none for a bit now.

yea I agree, might need to get a feel for a couple of these exercises and if I really do get a
good contraction and mind muscle connections going I might stick to them in the long run.

Let's move past the fact that I'm natural and your statement is utterly false and address just the ego component.

Having an ego isn't a bad thing so long as you acknowledge when it can become counterproductive to your goals and keep that in check/minimized. Having an ego isn't always going to negatively impact your results in the gym, but it CAN when you lift weight sub-optimally purely to satisfy your ego.

If you're at the gym solely for bodybuilding or aesthetics (don't care about strength, athletic ability, speed, etc) then yeah.

I still do the big 3, but nowhere as often as my powerlifting days. There are plenty of days where I go in and do 1 dumbell exercise followed exclusively by machine work. My physique has never been better and I've never had fewer injuries. Heavy free weights will wear your joints down much faster and wont make your physique any better.

I'm absolutely not at my limit. I may have only gained 2-3lbs of muscle over the last few years but I can look back on those years and pick apart all the things I've done that have been less than perfect (diet, sleep, managing stress, pre-habbing potential injuries, training intensity, ect..)

The growth will certainly slow but the more time you can dedicate to perfecting every variable the more likely things will move in a positive direction.
