On top of the lake, lots of great hiking in North Georgia.
Amicalola Falls one of my favorites

Easy access to rafting up in Tenn for a day if you wanted.
Got ATL right below so all the benefits of a major city are there.
Not too far from the beaches, both in the carolinas or florida for vacation spots.
Even within distance for semi decent skiing with trips to NC close enough to do. I mean it's no Rockies, I been there and I get that. But can get some good skiing in up in NC too.
North GA GOAT place to live.

"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

Car's do pretty well because they never salt the roads. It almost never snows and if it does, it doesn't stick to the road. Its warm pretty much year round. You might get a few chilly days of winter but for the most part a hoodie can be adequate. And again its only a few days before you can be outside in shorts and a t-shirt again. South Louisiana literally has some of the best food in the country if that's your thing.
What area of the state you looking at? Baton Rouge (Especially near LSU) literally has some of the most beautiful females in the country IMO. Yes there are a ton of fatties because its the south, but there are also a ton of HBB's. You'll miss the beaches of course but a 4 or 5 hour drive (if you live in South La) will get you on the beaches in Florida. There are other beaches along the way but IMO Florida beaches are the best in the US.
Some of the cities really suck but some are decent. A single guy without kids making 90K a year will damn near live like a king. If you don't want it to be permanent it would be completely feasible to live extremely well on 60- 70K a year and bank 20k-30k per year... After you get a few hundred grand in the bank or so move to a more desirable location.

I think the closest city will be Shreveport, if that helps.

OP...It is crawfish season down here. BISHES love crawfish. If they don't then kick them to the curb. But yes......$90k here would be considered a raise due to living expenses. Out here you can get a nice apartment for $1200 (ranging from 800sq.ft. to 1k sq.ft.) 1 bedroom of course.

Wtf at not naming the city? So it's not New Orleans or Baton Rouge?
I wouldn't want to live anywhere in LA but NOLA...which I live now. I've lived in Miami, San Antonio and obscure places like Albuquerque and Gainesville. NOLA is a great place with a lot of culture.
I make $90k base and it's plenty enough to get you in a good spot, partake in the city AND save significant money.
Lol at BR unless you're a college kid.

Well I wouldn't want to do it.
Husband's long time best friend lives in east Texas, maybe an hour from Shreveport.
No thanks.
And I'm not that picky. From Texas and I would take Arkansas, Tennessee, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Missouri...

If you have a 2 yr plan, wouldn't be a bad idea but it would have to really include stacking serious money or you'd be miserable. I had this issue once taking a project in middle MS. F that again.

Also, beautiful women are scarce.
The food and culture are like no other, srs. I left Miami after 1.5 years to come back. But again, that place is a polar opposite.

You make $120k and can't figure out the c.o.l. in another state?

I live in opelousas, louisiana. It really isnt a bad place to live at all. Fishing / hunting in decent traveling distance. Like most have mentioned 90k salary here is really good, the hbbs are around, they arn't rampant, but if you know where to look; gyms, churches, fairs, bazaars, sports bars etc you can find something you like. The food is great. Though with that being said some parts of la are ****, I havent read through all of the thread, but I don't think you mentioned where'd you be. Cops where I live arn't really strict on weed unless you have over a certa in amount on you, forgot how much but you can easily find that out on Google somewhere, same with your tax question.

Cost of living is what it is for a reason
If it's low, it's because it's a chithole that no one wants to live in. If living in a chithole appeals to you, then by all means take advantage of the low COL
[I posted this in the finance section but wanted to drop it here also for more views]*
There is a good chance a company makes me an offer and I know it will be below six figures, which is a step down from my salary with is slightly under 120k however I know the cost of living change (moving from the bay area to Louisiana) could be considered significant. I don't want to tip the exact town as I don't really want the company to be indentifiable for privacy purposes, but it's not a major city like shreveport, more like a smaller city/town but not rural either.
What should I consider before making a decision?
Is taking the salary hit compensated by COL?
Ideally I would like to hear from someone who lives/works there. I am familiar with the south in a general sense as I have lived in Texas and Georgia so the culture shock wouldn't be extreme, but I am not familar with Louisiana. I am a bachelor in his prime, so local education, home ownership, etc are not my priorities right now, getting the most bang for my buck expense wise, and slaying copious amounts of southern belles are. My background is I was born and raised in Cali but spent six years in the army where I did live in the south, but now am more of a stereotypical "techie" as we are derragatorily termed here in the bay area.
Also, a few points I would like to hear informed opinions on:
taxes
gun laws
marijuana laws
any climate factors etc that could affect my car (i.e. if I was moving to Jersey, concerns might be snow and salt...guessing here)
Hit me with it!
For reference, a salary of $120,000 in San Francisco is equivalent to $37,902 in the nearest city I could find that matches what you describe. So, anything above that would be a raise homie.

As a single guy, I would definitely not do this unless it were a significant increase in salary or position
